PAK vs WI 2021: Five more members of West Indies Camp tests positive for COVID-19

PAK vs WI 2021: West Indies tour of Pakistan is unlikely to continue as five more members of the West Indies squad have tested positive for COVID-19. Five Windies players who returned with positive results include Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, and Justin Greaves, along with assistant coach Roddy Estwick and team physician Dr. Akshai Mansingh.

Cricket West Indies has confirmed that all three players who have tested for COVID-19 will be unavailable for the remaining fixtures of the tour -one T20I & three ODIs while all the five members who have tested positive will remain in isolation for 10 days. They won’t be allowed to join the main team until they test negative for COVID-19. Once all remaining members of the West Indies touring party have been tested again, CWI and PCB officials will meet to determine if the tour can continue.

“All three players will therefore miss the upcoming matches and all five individuals will remain isolated from the rest of the West Indies squad and are now under the care and supervision provided by the medical officials. They will remain in isolation for ten (10) days or until they return negative PCR test results,” a Cricket West Indies release stated.

“CWI and PCB Officials will be meeting on Thursday morning, once all members of the touring party have been tested again, to determine whether the tour can continue”, CWI added in its statement.

West Indies is already short of six players as its key players Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers have already been ruled out due to positive Covid-19 tests while Devon Thomas sustained a finger injury during the first T20I. Windies are now short of six players which raises doubts over the continuation of the tour.

With a short of six players, West Indies have just 13 players to choose from for their T20I & ODI Squads. West Indies batting department will be hard hit as Only Nicholas Pooran, Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks, and Darren Bravo remain available among specialist batters.

Earlier, Cottrell, Chase, and Mayers had returned with positive results in the initial tests that were done after the team’s arrival in Karachi on December 9. The trio missed both the T20Is that have been played so far, with Pakistan taking a series-winning 2-0 lead after winning both. The third T20I is scheduled for Thursday, December 16.

West Indies were already struggling with the unavailability of their senior players such as Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Evin Lewis, or Fabian Allen due to rest, injuries, or personal reasons & now with more players getting ruled out of the remaining tour due to COVID-19 there is a greater probability of the tour being called off in middle.
