David Warner plans to take Test Retirement after 2023 Ashes

David Warner has indicated that he could retire from Test Cricket after Ashes 2023-24. The future of senior players has come under doubt after Australia’s shocking exit from the T20 World Cup 2022. Australian greats such as Matthew Hayden have demanded to revamp of the team claiming that it’s time for seniors to step aside before the next T20 World Cup in 2024.

The ODI World Cup will be held in India in 2023 before the T20 World Cup in 2024. & Warner has made it clear that he will play in both events before calling time on his International Career.

“Test cricket will probably be the first one to fall off. Because that’s how it will pan out. The T20 World Cup is in 2024, (one-day) World Cup is next year. Potentially it could be my last 12 months in Test cricket.”

Australia Cricket is likely to undergo a significant change with senior players considering to take retirement in the next 18 months. Warner & Usman Khawaja will be 36 by the end of Ashes 2023 while Nathan Lyon will be 35 & Mitchell Starc & Hazlewood will be 32. Steve would also be 33 but he still has a few more years to continue.

Meanwhile, despite failing to create a mark in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022, Warner has rejected the talks of calling it over before the T20 World Cup 2024. He said that he loves T20 Cricket & is looking ahead to T20 World Cup 2024. Cricket Australia is also reworking its code of conduct which would allow Warner to claim for removing his leadership ban imposed after his ball-tampering saga. However, the reworked code is awaiting the board’s approval with Warner expected to attend a hearing with Cricket’s Integrity unit later this month.

Warner further said that he would be glad if he could pass his knowledge of the game to the younger generation as a captain. He also emphasized that if young players are willing to learn from him & if he gets the opportunity to captain the team again he would be happy to do that.
