Deepti Sharma Mankad: The third & final ODI between India Women & England Women became a talking point among fans & cricketers due to the incident of Deepti Sharma mankad Charlie Dean in the 44th over of the match to help India seal a series sweep 3-0.
Deepti Sharma Mankad: How did the Entire Incident Unfold?
During the second innings of the INDW vs ENGW 3rd ODI, England was just 17 runs away from chasing the target of 168 runs set by the India Women’s team. Charlie Dean (47 runs off 80 balls) was going strong at one end & was all set to take England Women toward a thrilling triumph. She was getting good support at the other end from Freya Davis.
However, there happened the unexpected when Deepti Sharma run-out Charlie Dean at the non-strikers’ end in the 44th over after witnessing that Charlie walked out of her crease even before Deepti ended her delivery stride. The matter was referred to the third umpire & the decision went in favor of India Women as mankad is legal as per the law of cricket. With the fall of the final wicket, India won the thrilling match by 16 runs, thereby sweeping the series 3-0.
Is ‘Mankad/Mankading’ a Legal Act?
For those who aren’t aware Mankading is no more an illegal act. As per the new rules of ICC which will come into effect from October 1, 2022. The method of Mankad would be moved from the ‘Unfair Play’ Section to the ‘Run Out’ Section.
Despite the law terming the dismissal at non-strikers end as legal. Many Cricketers & fans have opposed Deepti Sharma act of Mankad. But when there is opposition there are supporters too as many famous names of World Cricket such as Virender Sehwag, Wasin Jaffer, and Tabraiz Shamsi came out in support of Deepti.
The dismissal at non-strikers end was first done by Indian Cricket Vinoo Mankad during 1947-48 India’s tour of Australia when he run-out Bill Brown at non-strikers end. After the incident, the practice was termed ‘Mankading’. Many claims that Mankad is against the spirit of the game but it is legal as per the laws of ICC.
ENGW vs INDW 3rd ODI: India Women Outclassed England Women by 16 Runs, Sweep series by 3-0
India gave a great farewell to Jhulan Goswami after sweeping the series 3-0. Batting first, riding on the backs of Smriti Mandhana (50) & Deepti Sharma (68) India registered 169 runs target on board. England bowlers such as Kate Cross (4-26), Freya Kemp (2-24) & Sophie Ecclestone (2-27) all returned with wickets to restrict India from scoring big.
In reply, India displayed a great show with the ball as Renuka Singh (4-29) restricted England to 65-7. However, a knock from Amy Jones(28) & Charlotte Dean (47) brought England close to victory. However, Deepti Sharma Mankad Charlie Dean in the 44th over to seal 16 run win for India. Jhulan Goswami (2-38) who played her last International fixture & Rajeshwari (2-38) too contributed to India’s glorious triumph.
