Veteran South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect. In a surprising decision by the talented athlete, Pretorius mentioned that he has taken the radical decision to shift his focus to T20 cricket.
Dwaine Pretorius has remained one of the finest and most bankable all-rounders in international cricket. He was the first-choice all-rounder of South Africa’s shorter format contingent at the ICC T-20 World Cup in Australia. However, he sustained a thumb fracture right before the marquee event and was ruled out of the squad. Pretorius was replaced by Marco Jensen who did provide justice to his selection and has remained a priority since then.
Pretorius has signified that he wants to completely shift his focus toward T-20 cricket and emerge as the most commanding short-format player. In his letter to CSA, Pretorius stated that being an independent agent will help him to fulfill his aspirations of becoming a resilient T20 all-rounder. Notably, Pretorius was amongst the few South Africans who had a contract with CSA that was valid till March 2023.
Meanwhile, Pretorius is already unstoppable and accelerating his dominance in T-20 cricket. He is an incumbent part of the Chennai Super Kings at the cash-rich IPL, Welsh Fire at the Hundred, Durban Super Giants at the CSA T-20 League, and Barbados Royals at the Caribbean Premier League.
Addressing the media, Director of CSA Enoch Nkwe stated that Pretorius emerged as a quality player and displayed his consistency in white-ball cricket. He further added that his services will truly be missed. Pretorius made his stunning debut for South Africa against Ireland in 2016 where he scored a fifty in the second game of his career.
Here are some of the highlights of a Dwaine Pretorious’s remarkable career:
