ENG vs IND 2022: India opener Mayank Agarwal has received a call-up for the rescheduled fifth Test against England slated to begin on July 1. Agarwal will join the rest of the Indian squad late on Monday. As per the updated travel advisory, Agarwal will not be required to undergo quarantine on arrival which will make him eligible to play immediately as per the requirement.
Initially, Agarwal was left out of the touring Indian squad. However, due to the injury of KL Rahul & doubts over Rohit Sharma’s availability due to COVID-19, Agarwal was included in India’s Test squad for the Edgbaston Test.
Agarwals’ Lean Form has become a Cause of Concern
Mayank Agarwal had last featured for the Indian team in the Sri Lanka test series where he managed to score just 59 runs in two fixtures at an average of 19.66. Recently he was featured in the Ranji Trophy 2022 quarter finals for Karnataka against Uttar Pradesh.
His form has become a significant concern for the selectors and the opener himself. During the IPL 2022, he managed to score just 196 runs at an average of 16.33 and strike rate of 122.5 as the captain of the Punjab Kings. Considering Agarwal’s lean form, former India head coach Ravi Shastri said that his diminishing form is the result of his struggles in dealing with the pressure of captaincy.
“I love the kid. I know how he plays his cricket, how determined he is. But it’s putting a guy who is very good at what he does in the wrong place,” Shastri had said.
The Birmingham Test is the fifth Test from last year’s series which was called off due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Indian team. Agarwal was initially a part of that Test squad & was the first choice opener however a concussion before the series opener match handed an opportunity to Rahul, who was India’s second-highest run-getter with 315 runs in eight innings.
