ENG vs IND 5th Test: Electrifying Rishabh Pant led India to 338-7 at Stumps on Day 1

ENG vs IND 5th Test: ‘Edgbaston’, a ground that has favored the Indian team on rare occasions has witnessed the rise of Rishabh Pant who with his freakish genius with the bat has stunned one & all. Prolific young batsman coming from the streets of Delhi has once again proved why he became the backbone of India’s Test team.

Rishabh Pant’s Masterclass proved to be a rescue act for India

Coming to bat at 98 for 5 when India was struggling with the early fall of wickets, Rishabh Pant got the better of England’s fierce pace attack by smashing England’s pacers all across the park. England’s seam attack which was successful in wiping out India’s top-order saw a sudden change in the momentum of the game, thanks to the upholding performance by India’s star batter Rishabh Pant. Pant joined hands with Jadeja & the duo stitched a 222-run stand for the sixth wicket to guide India from 98 for 5 to 338 for 7 at stumps on Day one.

Back-foot shots, lofted drives, one-handed over long-on shots, reverse scooping shots, and square-on shots all came together off Rishabh Pant’s bat who made a point to smash England’s pace attack brutally across the Edgbaston Stadium. In the process, Pant registered the fastest Century by an Indian wicket-keeper by getting to the 100 mark in just 89 balls. Pant looked well-settled on crease & went on to unleash his full flurry on England, whose every tactic to stop Pant went in vain.

Ravindra Jadeja on the other end provided great support to electrifying Pant. He went on to score an unbeaten 82* off 163 balls & shut the mouth of critics who were opposing his inclusion in the Playing XI in place of Ravichandran Ashwin. Soon the duo’s blooming 222-run stand was broken with Joe Root dismissing Pant just three runs short of 150 runs. Rishabh Pant was sent back to the pavilion after scoring 146 runs off 111 balls in an innings embellished with 19 fours & four sixes.

By the time Pant was dismissed the job was already done for India as they were all set to post an imposing total on board. After Pant’s dismissal, Ravindra Jadeja took the onus & kept the scoreboard ticking for India. However, Shardul Thakur couldn’t get going & was dismissed after scoring just one run. Then came Mohammad Shami on crease & he along with Ravindra Jadeja ensured that there is no further loss of wickets for India. India ended the opening day at 338 for 7 with Jadeja remaining unbetaten at 83* off 162 balls while Mohammad Shami stayed unbeaten at 0.

Earlier after putting in to bat first, India got off to a humiliating start as both the openers Shubman Gill (17) & Pujara (13) failed to create a mark with the bat. India was soon reeling at 46 for 2. Wicket kept falling for India as Hanuma Vihari (20), Virat Kohli (11), and Shreyas Iyer (15) all failed to convert their good starts into big scores. India was reeling at 98-5 after lunch & then came Rishabh Pant & Ravindra Jadeja for India’s rescue who carried on from there & took India to a comfortable position at stumps.
