ENG vs IND 5th Test: Jasprit Bumrah to lead India as Rohit Sharma tests positive again

ENG vs IND 5th Test: Jasprit Bumrah is all set to become India’s first paceman in 35 years to lead the Indian test team for the rescheduled Test against England on Friday. Regular captain Rohit Sharma has once again tested positive for Covid-19 in the mandatory pre-match test on Wednesday.

Kapil Dev was the last Indian pacer who led the Indian Test team back in 1987. However, he was removed from Captaincy of all formats after India lost the 1987 World Cup Semi-finals against England. Since then, India has never seen a fast bowler leading the national Test team in the traditional format of the game.

Addressing a pre-match press conference, a senior BCCI official confirmed that Rohit Sharma has once again tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday. In the absence of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah had been assigned as the vice-captain and he will be formally leading the side in the rescheduled test.

Jasprit Bumrah will serve as India’s 36th test captain in the longest format of the game. The paceman from Gujarat has grown to be among the world’s best fast bowlers. Bumrah has scalped 123 wickets in 29 test matches.

The Chairman of the BCCI selection committee had earlier addressed the media that Bumrah has been groomed to be a leader of the future cricket team. Leading India against a stalwart opponent England will truly boost the morale and confidence of the pacer.

Fast bowlers in India have not been assigned the top post in the Test format unlike other countries like Pakistan which has seen three revolutionary pacemen Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis leading the national side.

India is currently leading the five-match test series by 2-1. In order to retain the Pataudi Trophy, India will have to draw or win the game. With Rohit and KL Rahul out of the side, it will be interesting to see how India combats the English attack.

Bumrah’s captaincy will be the most-watched factor in the match as he will aim to lead with an example.
