ENG vs NZ 3rd Test: Stuart Broad has been facing serious disciplinary action for his misconduct in the final test against New Zealand. Broad received an official reprimand from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and a demerit point added to his record for a breach of the code of conduct during the Headingley Test.
Stuart Broad deliberately threw the ball while fielding at New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell. Mitchell would have been in trouble as the ball could have hit him and caused a grieving injury. Broad apologized for the incident but has faced serious allegations for his conduct.
Broad was charged with a breach of Article 2.9 which refers to throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate or dangerous manner. The incident had occurred in the 89th over of the third Test match when New Zealand was batting in the second innings.
Broad had fielded the ball and threw it towards Mitchell in his follow-through. Mitchell had not left his crease and this incident spiced up the moments on the field.
The breach by Stuart Broad was similar to that of Carlos Braithwaite during a Vitality English T-20 Blast. Playing for Birmingham Bears, Braithwaite had deliberately thrown the ball at an opponent batsman for which his team was penalized with five runs.
Stuart Broad admitted the Level One offense and accepted the sanctions proposed against him by the ICC Match Referee David Boon at Headingley.
Broad’s count of demerit points has increased to two within a 24-months period. He had previously earned a demerit point for directing inappropriate words at Pakistani spinner Yasir Shah during a test match at Old Trafford in 2020.
Collecting four or more demerit points within 24 months can lead to a ban in one test or two limited-overs fixtures. Broad needs to keep his calm on-field and obey the rules and regulations.
Meanwhile, England went on to win the third and final test by seven wickets to seal the series by 3-0. Broad scalped three wickets in the first innings but went wicketless in the second.
