ENG vs NZ Highlights, T20 WC 2022: England beats New Zealand by 20 runs

ENG vs NZ Highlights, T20 WC 2022: Three Lions displayed a great show with both bat & Ball & defeated New Zealand by 20 runs to stay alive in the Playoff Race. The match unfolded with England batting first & posting a decent 179 runs on board.

Buttler’s 73 runs guided England to a decent 179-run target

England’s openers Alex Hales & Jos Buttler provided their side with a fantastic start by stitching a rewarding 81-run stand for the first wicket. The duo took New Zealand bowlers to the cleaners by hitting regular boundaries & sixes. Soon their powering stand was broken when Hales got dismissed in the 11th over after scoring 52 runs off 40 balls with seven fours & one six. Hales’s dismissal didn’t affect Buttler at the other end who further stitched a 45-run stand for the third wicket with Liam Livingstone.

However, they couldn’t cross a 50-run stand with Livingstone getting dismissed in the 18th over for 20 runs off 14 balls. Wickets then kept falling but Jos Buttler was going strong at the other end. He scored 73 runs off 47 balls in an inning embellished with seven fours & two sixes. He looked in astute form smashing regular boundaries & maximums. On the back of his onslaught with willow England was able to finish their innings at 179 runs in the allotted 20 overs. For New Zealand Lockie Ferguson starred with the ball by returning with figures of 2-45.

Phillips-Williamson’s 91-run stand went in Vain

In reply, New Zealand got off to a poor start as they lost their openers Fin Allen (16) & Devon Conway (3) in the powerplay overs reducing New Zealand to 28-2 in 4.6 overs. Then came New Zealand’s star batters Glenn Phillips & Kane Williamson on the crease who together anchored the Black Caps innings. The duo stitched a blistering 91-run stand for the third wicket to help New Zealand recover from an early jolt. However, their blooming stand was broken when Ben Stokes dismissed Williamson for 40 runs off 40 balls. Williamson’s dismissal didn’t affect Phillips on the other end. He also amassed his half-century in just 25 balls & was facing England’s pace attack with great determination.

However Black caps winning hopes suffered a major blow when Curran struck in the 18th over to dismiss dangerous Glenn Phillips from the crease. Phillips walked back to the hut after scoring 62 runs off 36 balls in an innings embellished with four boundaries & three sixes. In the end, Mitchell Santner (16 off 10) & Ish Sodhi (6 off 6) played quick cameos but fell short of the target by 20 runs. The Black Caps succumbed in front of England’s fiery pace attack & could score just five runs in the last over ending their innings at 159-6. For England Sam Curran (2-26) & Chris Woakes (2-33) starred with the ball.

With this glorious triumph, England has surpassed Sri Lanka to grab the second spot in the Group 1 Points table. They will face Sri Lanka in their next fixture in Sydney on Saturday while the table-toppers New Zealand will face Ireland in their next fixture on Friday.
