ENG vs PAK Final: England thrashes Pakistan by five wickets to lift T20 World Cup

ENG vs PAK Final: England clinched their second T20 World Cup title after defeating Pakistan by five wickets in the T20 World Cup 2022 final at the MCG on Sunday. The last time the World Champions had lifted the title was back in 2010 under Paul Collingwood’s captaincy.

Azam-Masood led the fightback for Pakistan

The toss of the much crucial fixture was won by England who won the toss & decided to bowl first. Batting first Pakistan got off to a brisk start with Rizwan & Babar putting up 29 runs for the first wicket. However soon the opening stand was broken when Curran dismissed Rizwan in the fifth over reducing Pakistan to 29-1. Mohammad Haris (8) too failed to hit the straps & was sent packing in the eighth over of Adil Rashid’s delivery reducing Pakistan to 45-2. However, Babar Azam on the other end didn’t lose hope he joined hands with Shan Masood & stitched a 39-run stand to keep Pakistan’s scoreboard ticking. Adil Rashid dismissed Babar Azam in the 12th over for 32 runs off 28 balls followed by Iftikhar Ahmed (0) in the 13th over to give Pakistan a major blow.

Masood then joined hands with Shadab Khan to stitch a 36-run stand for the fifth wicket to keep Pakistan’s scoreboard ticking. Masood played a beautiful knock of 38 runs off 28 balls with two fours & one six. While Shadab Khan too supported him by scoring 20 runs off 14 balls with two fours. After both the batters got dismissed there was no revival for Pakistan with the lower order losing wickets in quick succession. In the end, Pakistan ended their innings with 137 runs in 20 overs. England bowlers did a splendid job with the ball with Sam Curran (3-12), Adil Rashid (2-22), and Chris Jordan (2-27) being the pick of bowlers.

Buttler-Stokes guides England to T20 World Cup 2022 Title Triumph

In reply, England lost their first wicket with Afridi dismissing Alex Hales in the first over reducing England to 7-1. Salt (10) too couldn’t stay for long & was dismissed in the fourth over reducing England to 32-2. Wickets kept falling but Buttler on the other end was going strong with the willow. He scored 26 runs off 17 balls with three fours & one six to keep England’s scoreboard ticking. After Buttler’s dismissal, Stokes joined hands with Brook & they stitched a 39-run stand for the fourth wicket. The duo smashed Pakistan across the park & made a mockery of them. But soon their blooming stand was broken when Harry Brook was dismissed for 23 runs off 20 balls, reducing England to 84-4. Then came England’s star batter Moeen Ali on the crease who joined hands with Stokes to guide England near the run-chase.

The duo stitched a rewarding 48 runs stand for the fifth wicket. Mooen Ali scored 19 runs off 13 balls while Stokes played the role of an aggressor by scoring 52 runs off 49 balls with five fours & one six. It was Ben Stokes’s power-hitting & Moeen Ali’s calculative moves that helped England to chase the target in 18.2 overs. For Pakistan, the best bowler was Haris Rauf who returned with figures of 2-23. Pakistan’s fate was not in their favor as Shaheen Afridi couldn’t finish his overs as he sustained an injury while taking a catch of Harry Brook.

Pakistan 137-8 (Shan Masood 38, Babar Azam 32; Sam Curran 3-12) England 138-5 (Ben Stokes 52*, Jos Buttler 26, Haris Rauf 2-23)
