ENG vs SL Highlights, T20 WC 2022: England books a berth in the Semi-Finals

ENG vs SL Highlights, T20 WC 2022: Clinical England displayed an all-round show to register a scintillating four wickets win over Sri Lanka in their last group stage fixture. With this victory, England ends the Super 12 stage on second place in Group 1 Points Table & becomes the second team to qualify for the Semi-finals.

Nissanka’s blitzkrieg helped Sri Lanka to post a defendable total on board

Batting first Sri Lanka got off to a mind-blowing start with openers Pathum Nissanka & Kusal Mendis amassing 39 runs for the first wicket. Soon their happiness was reduced with Woakes dismissing Mendis in the 4th over for 18 runs off 14 balls. Pathum Nissanka then joined hands with Dhanajaya De Silva to stitch a 33-run stand for the second wicket to keep their scoreboard ticking. This partnership too couldn’t flourish further with Curran dismissing De Silva for 9 runs reducing Sri Lanka to 72-2. Then was a mini-collapse for Sri Lanka as wickets kept falling like a pack of cards. But Nissanka on the other end was going strong with the willow.

Sri Lanka then suffered a major jolt with Adil Rashid dismissing Nissanka in the 16th over. The swashbuckling batter went back to the hut after scoring 67 runs off 45 balls with two fours & five sixes. Rajapaksa tried to provide resistance by scoring 22 runs off 22 balls with three fours. After the fall of Rajapaksa’s wicket in the 20th over things were all but over for Sri Lanka. As a result, Sri Lanka’s innings were wrapped at 141-8 in 20 overs. For England, Mark Wood starred with the ball by returning with figures of 3-26.

Alex-Stokes knocks helped England to chase the target

In reply, England got off to a blastic start with openers Jos Buttler & Alex Hales firing cylinders right from the first ball of their innings. The duo made a mockery of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack by smashing 75-run for the first wicket. Buttler played a Captain’s knock of 28 runs off 23 balls with two fours & one six before getting dismissed in the 8th over off Hasaranga’s delivery. His opening partner too couldn’t provide resistance & was sent back in the 10th over after playing a useful knock of 47 runs off 30 balls in an innings braced with powerpack seven fours.

Sri Lankan bowlers kept strucking at regular intervals to dismiss England’s key batters cheaply. Harry brook (4), Moeen Ali (4), and Livingstone (1) all failed to hit the straps, reducing England from 75-0 to 129-6 in 17.6 overs. But it was Ben Stokes who kept their winning hopes alive. With 13 runs needed in the last over, Stokes along with Curran held their nerves & guided England over the line in 19.4 overs. Stokes finished unbeaten at 42 off 36 balls with an innings braced with two fours while Curran stayed unbeaten at 4 runs. For Sri Lanka, the pick of the bowlers were Lahiru Kumara (2-24), Wanindu Hasaranga (2-23), and Dhananjaya de Silva (2-24).
