Greg Barclay is all set to get re-elected as Chairman of International Cricket Council for a second term. Barclay who got elected as the chairman for the first time in December 2020 will serve as ICC Chairperson for another two years. In ICC a chairman can serve for three years in total.
However there seems no hurdle in the re-election this time as Braclay doesn’t have any opposition in front of him. Dr Tavengwa Mukuhlani the chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket who had filed nomination against him is likely to withdraw before the elections which is slated to be held on Saturday in Melbourne.
Till now the elections will be between two candidates Greg Barclay & Mukuhlani. But according to the sources Zimbabwean Mukuhlani would withdraw from the elections on the day itself. It is believed that some kind of mutual agreement have been reached among the ICC Directors. As per the rules of ICC, a candidate must have the backing of two current directors of the board to file the nomination.
It is also learnt that any candidate who wants to head the body will be required to have the support of BCCI. And it is understood that the BCCI has extended its support to Barclay. Initially, the BCCI wanted to have one candidate to contest the elections but it has decided against having one. The secretary of the BCCI, Jay Shah will be attending the ICC mettings & election.
Media sources have tried to reach out to the two contestants who have filed nominations but there was no immediate response. The whole scenario of the election has been formulated secretly with no ICC Offiical or member has thrown light on the election criteria. In fact, eltters have gone from ICC officials who have taken objection over the secrecy of the election process.
