South African batters, Rassie Van Der Dussen & David Miller achieved a remarkable feat in T20 cricket by stitching a match-winning 131-run stand for the fourth wicket in the first T20I against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday.
The duo’s 131-stand became the second-highest fourth-wicket stand in t20Is. Van Der Dussen smashed 75* off 46 balls while Miller socred unbeaten 64 off 31 balls to guide Proteas over the line in just 19.1 overs. David Warner & Glenn maxwell are on top of the list by stitching the highest fourth-wicket stand in the T20I format against the Proteas in Johannesburg back in 2016. The duo had a 161-run stand as Australia chased down the target of 205 runs. Warner smashed 77 off 40 while maxwell put on 75 in 43 balls.
By chasing the target of 211 runs, the Proteas have outdone their previous chase of 206 runs against the West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2007 in Johannesburg. Previously they were also successful in chasing a total of 200 & 189 runs against India in 2015 & 2018.
Coming to the first T20I, India was able to post a mammoth total of 211 runs. Riding on the back of blistering knocks from Ishan Kishan (76 off 48), Hardik Pandya (31 off 12) & Rishabh Pant (29 off 16), India was able to post a competitive total on board.
Chasing 212 runs target, South Africa got off to a poor start as they lost early wickets & at the end of the power-play overs their score read 61-2. The likes of Quinton de Kock (22 off 18), Temba Bavuma (10 off 8), and Dwaine Pretorius (29 off 13) all failed to hit the straps. As a result at the end of nine overs, South Africa had lost 3 wickets for 81 runs. Then came Rassie Van Der Dussen & David Miller on the crease for Proteas’ rescue & together the duo stitched a match-winning 131-run stand to help Proteas beat India by seven wickets. With this powering win, South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
India will now hope to bounce back & level the series by winning the second T20I slated to be played on Sunday at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
