With this win, Sri Lanka has increased their chances of qualifying for the summit clash. Meanwhile, a second consecutive defeat in the Super 4 stage meant that India could march into the finals only if other team results ends up in their favor.
IND vs SL Asia Cup 2022: Rohit- Suraykumar’s Blitzkrieg helped India to post a decent total
The match unfolded with Sri Lanka winning the toss & opting to bowl first. Batting first, India got off to a poor start as they lost early wickets in form of KL Rahul(6) & Virat Kohli (0) & were struggling at 13-2 in powerplay overs. However, it was Rohit Sharma & Suryakumar Yadav who steadied India’s innings by stitching 97 run-stand for the third wicket.
Rohit & Suryakumar were getting the better of Sri Lanka bowlers by smashing them all across the park. Rohit Sharma looked in sublime touch after scoring 72 runs off 41 balls in an innings embellished with five fours & fours sixes. Suryakumar too provided him great support at the other end by scoring 34 runs off 29 balls. The duo together took India beyond 100 run mark. However, soon their blooming stand was broken when Nissanka dismissed Rohit Sharma in the 13th over followed by Suryakumar Yadav in the 14th over.
After Suryakumar’s dismissal, there was a collapse for India as none of their batters could stitch a meaningful stand. Hardik Pandya (17), Rishabh Pant (17), and Deepak Hooda (3) all failed to convert their good starts. In the end, Ravichandran Ashwin’s quick cameo of 15 runs off 7 balls helped India to finish at 173 for eight in the allotted 20 overs.
For Sri Lanka Dilshan Madushanka starred with the ball by returning with figures of 3 for 24. He was well supported by Chamika Karunaratne (2-27) and captain Dasun Shanaka (2-26) who returned with two wickets each.
Nissanka- Mendis powering 97-run stand guided Sri Lanka to Victory
In reply Sri Lanka was off to a swash-buckling start as their openers, Pathum Nissanka & Kusal Mendis provided Sri Lanka with a mind-blowing start. They took the Indian bowlers to cleaners right from the word go & helped Sri Lanka to cross the 50-run mark in just 6 overs. They were smashing Indian bowlers for fours & sixes & soon took Sri Lanka to 89 run mark at the end of 10 overs without any loss of wickets.
Soon their 97-run stand was broken when Chahal dismissed Nissanka for 52 runs off 37 balls in an innings filled with four fours & two sixes in the 12th over. There was a mini collapse for Sri Lanka who lost two wickets in form of Asalanka (0) & Gunathilaka (1) in the next two overs.
However, Kusal Mendis was going strong with the bat at one end. But it was Chahal who had the last laugh after he removed Mendis for 57 runs off 37 balls in the 14th over, reducing Sri Lanka to 110-4 in 14.4 overs. It seemed like India will walk away with the match looking at Sri Lanka’s regular fall of wickets. But then came a twist in the story when Dasun Shanaka joined hands with Rajapaksa & did the unexpected.
The duo registered an unbeaten 64-run stand for the fifth wicket to guide Sri Lanka over the line in the fifth ball of the last over. Dasun Shanaka remained unbeaten at 33 off 18 balls while Bhanuka Rajapaksa remained unbeaten at 27 off 17 balls. India’s poor fielding & bowling efforts in the last over cost them the match.
For India, the best bowler was Yuzvendra Chahal who returned with three wickets for 34 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin too returned with one scalp.
