IND vs ZIM 2022: Versatile Indian frontline batsman KL Rahul has cleared the mandatory fitness test and is fit to lead the Indian contingent for the Zimbabwe tour. Surprisingly, Shikhar Dhawan has been demoted to the vice-captain’s rank even after successfully leading India’s team in the West Indies ODI series.
KL Rahul was earlier on standby as the southpaw contracted the novel covid virus before the West Indies series and underwent a sports hernia surgery prior to it. Rahul has now been drafted as the 16th member of the squad along with the status of captaincy.
In a major breakthrough for Rahul, the Lucknow Super Giants skipper was also included in India’s competitive squad for the Asia Cup 2022. India will kickstart its Asia Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in their inaugural fixture on August 27.
Rahul was closely monitored by the medical test who cleared his assessment after signs of significant improvement. Rahul passed the mandatory cardiovascular test and paced his training program. He was observed to be stunning in the nets and is getting back on his way to recovering his sizzling form.
KL Rahul has been away from playing international fixtures for India since the conclusion of IPL 2022. Rahul was in exceptional form for his debut season as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants where he scored three centuries and took the side to the playoffs.
KL Rahul will lead India for the second time. Earlier he led the Indian team during the ODI series in South Africa which they lost by 3-0.
Washington Sundar doubtful for Zimbabwe Series
Meanwhile, Indian spinner Washington Sundar has suffered a shoulder injury while playing for Lancashire at a county game. Sundar immediately left the field and did not play the game furthermore as a precautionary measure. Sundar was included in India’s squad for the Zimbabwe series but his inclusion remains doubtful.

India will face Zimbabwe in a three-match ODI series starting on August 18 with all the ODIs slated to be played at Harare Sports Club. The Indian touring contingent will leave for Zimbabwe later this week. The series is a part of the ICC World Cup Super League and is crucial for Zimbabwe as finishing in the top eight on the Super League table means direct qualification to the World Cup 2023. Meanwhile, the Indian team has already qualified for the marquee event being the hosts.
