New Zealand opener batsman Devon Conway & England’s spinner Sophie Ecclestone has been named as the “ICC Players of the Month for June”. Devon Conway became New Zealand’s first player to win the ICC Player of the Month award just after a month of making a debut in test cricket. Scoring a double century on debut against England at Lord’s followed by two half-centuries in the next two tests including the WTC Final, Devon displayed an astounding performance in his first month in test cricket.
Conway won the award by surpassing teammate Kyle Jamieson who won the ‘Player of the Match’ award in the WTC final against India & South Africa’s Quinton De Kock who was also the nominee of the “player of the month award for June’ after displaying stunning performances on their West Indies tour.
“I am truly honored to win this ward. That I have received it for my performances in test cricket make sit extra special for me”, said Conway in an ICC Press Release.
“Scoring a double century at Lord’s was like a dream come true for me & to have also been able to contribute to our win over India in the ICC World Test Championship Final I something that I know I will proudly look back on in years to come”.I would like to thank the ICC & New Zealand Cricket for their constant support & encouragement & look forward to the International Cricket to come in the second half of this year”, Devon added.
Whereas in Women’s cricket, left-arm spinner Ecclestone surpassed Indian pair of Shafali Verma & Sneh Rana to become England’s second women’s player to win the ICC Women’s player of the month award after Tammy Beaumont, who was awarded as Women’s Player of the year in February.
Ecclestone who also the winner of the ICC Emerging Player of the year award in 2018 has produced a spell-bounding bowling spell in the one-off test against India in Bristol. In a one-off test, she finished with a whopping eight-wicket haul. She also scalped two wickets each in the next two ODIs after the WTC Final.
“It’s really nice to win this award. It’s after a period in which we have played all three formats so it feels good to be recognized for my performances in test cricket & the white ball series”, said Ecclestone.
“We have been happy as a team how we have performed across this series. We would have liked to have won the test match but hopefully, we can clinch the multi-format series. It’s all crucial preparation for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand when we will be defending the title won in 2017, & we feel in a decent place as a team”, she added.
Power hitter Shafali Verma had been nominated for ‘ICC Player of the Month Award’ after producing 96 & 63 runs on her test debut in Bristol & hitting some valuable runs in the subsequent ODIs. Another nominee was Sneh Rana who produced gritty 80 runs knock in the second innings of a one-off test to save visitors from defeat in Bristol along with scalping four wickets.
