The legendary West Indian who is the face of the Mumbai Indians franchise, Kieron pollard has announced his retirement from IPL. After a disastrous performance in the IPL 2022, Pollard was expected to be released by the franchise on the IPL 2023 Retention day. However, ahead of the announcement of the final list of retentions Pollard & Mumbai Indians confirmed that he will take up a coaching role with Mumbai Indians & will leave the player’s position in the team. He will continue to play for the MI Emirates team in the ILT20 league.
Notably, Kieron Pollard was retained by the franchise for a whopping price of 6 crores ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. He was a part of the Mumbai Indians team for almost 13 seasons since joining the franchise in 2010. Pollard was also a part of Mumbai Indians five IPL triumphs & two Champions league trophies. But this is not the end of Pollard’s playing career as the legend would play for MI Emirates in the ILT20 & will be a part of Mumbai Indians Coaching staff for the rest of the IPL seasons.
“It hasn’t been the easiest decision to make as I will keep playing for a few more years. But I understand that this incredible franchise which has achieved so much needs to transition and if I’m no longer to play for MI then I cannot see myself playing against MI either. Once an MI always an MI. I am immensely proud, honored, and blessed to have represented the biggest and most successful team in the IPL for the past 13 seasons,” Kieron Pollard said in a statement.
Nita Ambani the owner of the Mumbai Indian team also heaped praise on Kieron Pollard for his immense contribution to the success of the Mumbai Indians franchise. She said that Kieron Pollard has been with the franchise in their thick & thins & has played a crucial role in the team’s success. She also emphasized that though they will miss his power-hitting on the field he would continue to play for MI Emirates in the ILT20.
Kieron Pollard IPL Retirement: A Glimpse of Legend’s Illustrious IPL Stint
Kieron Pollard a brand of his own is among a set of few players who have represented only one IPL franchise in their entire IPL career. Pollard’s aggressive approach with the willow, quick fielding & smart tactics with the ball made him one of the most expensive buys in the IPL 2010 auctions. Notably, Pollard is one of the two players in the IPL to be signed via a silent tie-breaker rule. For the unversed, it’s a rule where franchisees were asked to list down a price on a blank cheque with the highest bid getting the services of the players.
During his IPL career, Pollard has played 189 matches amassing 3412 runs & scalping 69 wickets. Pollard holds the record of hitting 223 sixes which is the fifth highest in the history of IPL. He bagged the Player of the Match Award on 14 occasions including in the 2013 finals when Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings to lift the IPL trophy for the first time.
In every season Pollard was among the franchisees’ retention list, but his below-the-par performance in the IPL 2022 has changed everything. In 11 matches during IPL 2022, Pollard has scored just 144 runs & his average of 14.40 and strike rate of 107.46 were his lowest in any IPL season. Things didn’t improve for Pollard as he underwent knee surgery during England’s summer & then played in CPL where he led TKR who failed to make it to the playoffs. Mumbai Indians decision to release Pollard came ahead of the IPL 2023 auctions as the franchise aims to enter the auctions with a bigger purse. However, as Mumbai Indians policy is to form life-long bonds with their players, they have transferred Pollard into the role of batting coach.
