IRE vs IND: The National Selection Committee is all set to promote Hardik Pandya as a T20I Captain in the near future. The BCCI & National selectors want to manage the workload of Rohit Sharma who is the captain of all three formats. The selectors have been quite impressed by Hardik Pandya’s leadership quality who is successfully leading India’s T20I squad in the ongoing Ireland Series. Thus they are planning to hand over the captaincy reins of the T20I team to Hardik Pandya in the future for their short-term tours.
“There is no question of replacing Rohit Sharma anytime soon. But at the same time, it is important to manage his workload. Yes, Hardik is in our plans as there will be many short tours in the future and he is not in Test plans at the moment,” a selection committee member told InsideSport.
Keeping in view KL Rahul’s spate of injuries & Rishabh Pant could not be available for each & every short bilateral series being an integral member of the Test side, Hardik Pandya is considered the best captaincy candidate for the T20I format along with regular captain Rohit Sharma.
Hardik Pandya is considered the best option for T20I captaincy considering his outstanding stint as the Captain of debutants Gujarat Titans in the recently ended IPL 2022. Apart from it, he is the only limited-overs specialist at the moment & being an all-rounder he is given more preference over Bhuvnehswar Kumar for taking up the captaincy for future T20I tours.
Even Sehwag has opened up on Rohit Sharma’s workload management & asked BCCI to relieve him from T20I Captaincy.
“If the Indian team management has someone else in mind as captain in the T20 format, then I think, Rohit could be relieved and the following can be taken into consideration going forward,” Sehwag told PTI in an interview.
Sehwag also said that relieving him from T20I captaincy would help to reduce his burden & will allow him to concentrate more on Test & ODI formats. Unlike earlier, India have multiple captaincy options. During Virat Kohli’s tenure, Rohit Sharma was the only option. But at present, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Hardik Pandya are three options India have.
“It’s true we do have many captaincy options but they need to be groomed as well. Rohit’s workload is definitely a priority but at the same time, in big tournaments, we need his expertise as a batter and the leader. As for injuries, he knows how to take care of himself,” the selection committee member told the media.
Meanwhile, India have successfully won the first T20I by seven wickets. They would lock horns in the second & the final T20I on June 28th in Dublin.
