Joe Root becomes first England Player to reach 17,000 International Run-Mark

Joe Root, the former England captain, became the first England player to reach the 17,000-run mark in international cricket on June 5 (Sunday). During the first Test match between England and New Zealand at Lord’s, the right-handed batter accomplished this feat.

Joe Root’s unbeaten 115 off 170 balls guided England to a stunning five-wicket win over New Zealand. As a result of his batting antics, Root was named player of the match. Meanwhile, Root’s bat continued to break records, as he became the second English player to reach 10,000 runs earlier in the day.

Joe Root also said in a statement that the captaincy was taking a huge toll on his mental health. Now with no burden of Captaincy, Joe Root is emerging with flying colors. Joe Root became the second England player to achieve the 10,000 runs mark following the footsteps of former England captain Alastair Cook. The former England captain has amassed 12,472 in 161 Tests for an average of 45.35 after smashing 33 centuries and 57 half-centuries.

Root has now joined an elite group of cricketers who have scored 10,000 & above runs in the longest format of cricket. The list includes Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Ricky Ponting (13,378), Jacques Kallis (13,289), and Rahul Dravid (13,288), and Alastair Cook (13,288).

New Zealand was bowled out for 132 runs in their opening innings of the first Test match. The Kiwis, on the other hand, made a comeback in the contest, bowling England out for 141 runs in their second innings. The visitors scored 285 runs in the third innings, thanks to Daryl Mitchell’s century and wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell’s 96.

Chasing 277 Root came to bat when their score read 32-2. Soon England were reeling at 69-4, but Root steadied their ship along with Ben Stokes. The duo put a 90-run stand to rebuild England’s innings. However, after Stokes’s dismissal at 54, Root ensured that England crosses the finishing line by stitching an unbeaten 120-run stand with Ben Foakes, out of which he himself scored 81 runs. Joe Root’s blistering performance with the bat helped England to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test Series against New Zealand.
