Veteran South African cricketer Lance Klusener has withdrawn his application for the position of South Africa’s white-ball head coach. Klusener had earlier displayed his interest to get elected to the top post and filed his nomination.
Notably, Klusener’s application was shortlisted by Cricket South Africa (CSA) three weeks ago, and was set to give his interview. However, he decided to pull out from the fray after he had decided to focus and transmit his expertise in franchise T-20 cricket.
Lance Klusener is the incumbent coach of the Durban Super Giants franchise in the CSA T-20 League. He has stupendous coaching experience as he has been in charge of Zimbabwe and Afghanistan’s national cricket teams and the Dolphins club in South Africa.
Lance Klusener’s withdrawal has opened doors for fort-runners
Lance Klusener’s withdrawal has now boosted the chances of other members in the fray. Klusener was undisputedly the frontrunner to take over the position taking into consideration his mammoth experience. The CSA will now elect its upcoming head coach amongst incumbent interim coach Malibongwe Maketa, U-19 Coach Shukri Conrad, Caribbean veteran Richard Pybus, Titans coach Rob Walter, and assistant coach Adrian Birrell.
The CSA will likely stay reluctant on its decision to appoint two distinct coaches for red-ball and white-ball formats. While Conrad seems to be the favorite to take over the Test team, it is likely that interim head coach Maketa will ascend the throne for the ODI and T-20I teams. In view of the upcoming World Cup in 2023, the upcoming head coach will be delegated an important responsibility.
Meanwhile, Klusener’s backout will likely hurt the sentiments of CSA. Klusener was one of the greatest South African batsmen who made a valuable contribution to the national side. In his golden period, South Africa reached a peak in international cricket in 1999. He has smashed 3,576 runs in his favorite ODI format at an average of 41.10.
The CSA will likely announce the decision of the side’s head coach in the coming week of January.
