Ashes 2021-2022 : David Boon tests positive for COVID-19, will miss the fourth test

The match referee for the ongoing Ashes 2021-2022 series, David Boon has tested positive for COVID-19 & thus will miss the fourth test at the SCG stadium starting on Janaury 5, 2022. Boon will be replaced by Steve Bernard who is also a part of the International panel of ICC referees. Boon will return back to his umpiring role for the fifth test in Hobart starting from January 14,2022.

David Boon is asymptomatic & fully vaccinated including having a booster shot. He will stay in Melbourne where he tested positive for COVID-19 & will quarantine for 10 days according to the health guidelines of the Victorian State Government. He will return back ahead of the fifth & the final test in Hobart.

Meanwhile, All the players of both the teams their families, the England and Australian support staff and the match officials have been undergoing daily PCR tests since Monday, December 27. During the second day of the third test four COVID-19 positive cases were reported in England’s touring contingent. Two members of the support staff and two family members of support staff returned positive for COVID-19. The gameplay also began 30 minutes late on the second day as all the players underwent rapid tests before the start of the game & the match was started only when all the members returned with negative results in tests.

Chris Silverwood will miss the fourth test after being deemed as a close of COVID-19 Person

What comes as a major blow for England’s team is that their Head Coach Chris Silverwood has been ruled out of the fourth test after being deemed as a close contact of a COVID-19 person. Silverwood’s family member has tested positive for COVID-19 taking the tally of positive cases within the touring contingent to seven. According to health guidelines, Silverwood has isolated himself for 10 days. Graham Thorpe will take on the head coach’s role for the fourth Test in the absence of Silverwood.

Coming back to the series, Australia have an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Ashes 2021-2022 series after winning all the three test matches played till now by good margins. They retained the Ashes series by an innings & 14 runs after bowling out England for a meager 68 runs to win the test match within three days.
