Pakistan Captain Babar Azam, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan, South Africa’s opener Janneman Malan & paul Stirling has been nominated for ICC men’s ODI player of the Year Award 2021.
The ICC Awards 2021 will recognize & award the outstanding achievements & feats in Cricket over the past year. Earlier ICC also announced the nominees for the test player of the year & the T20I Player of the Year awards.
Let’s have a look at the achievements of the nominees for the ICC Men’s ODI player of The Year 2021 Award
- Babar Azam:
Pakistan captain Babar Azam smashed 405 runs in six ODIs at an average of 67.50 with two centuries in 2021. He smashed 208 runs during Pakistan’s 2-1 series win over South Africa & was also awarded as the ‘Player of the Match’ in Pakistan’s both series wins. Azam smashed a century in the first ODI and an 82-ball 94 in the final game.
Babar Azam also scored a blistering 158 runs during the third ODI of the three-match ODI series against England played in Birmingham. Batting first, Pakistan posted 331. However, the visitors lost the game as England chased the total down with two overs to spare. Azam’s stunning run in the ODIs in the past year made him a deserving nominee for the Men’s ODI Player of the Year 2021 Award.
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan has played nine ODI during 2021 & has returned with 277 runs at an average of 39.57 with two half-centuries registered to his name. He also scalped 17 wickets with his left-arm spin at an average of 17.52. Shakib-Al-Hasan made a solid comeback to International Cricket following a ban over not reporting suspicious action.
After returning to International Cricket, Shakib-Al-Hasan was named as the ‘Player of the Series against West Indies in January 2021. The veteran cricketer scored 113 runs & fetched six wickets as Bangladesh registered a series sweep by 3-0.
Shakib was also named as the ‘Player of the Series’ for their series sweep against Zimbabwe. He contributed 145 runs & scalped eight wickets in the three-match series against Zimbabwe.
- Janneman Malan:
South African opener Janneman Malan has been named as one of the nominees for the ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Year 2021 Award. He registered a scintillating 509 runs knock in eight matches at an amazing average of 84.83 with two tons & two fifties.
Malan also won the ‘Player of the Series award in the three-match ODI series against Ireland. His stunning 84 runs knock scored in the second ODI went in vain as South Africa suffered a defeat at the hands of Ireland. However, Malan’s 177 runs in the third ODI proved vital in guiding Africa towards victory & helped them to clinch the series against Ireland.
Even during South Africa’s ODI series against Sri Lanka, Malan proved to be a vital cog in guiding Proteas to success. He scored 121 runs off 135 balls on a difficult batting track in Colombo. By bagging huge 509 ODI runs in 2021, Malan is the second-highest run-scorer of the year.
- Paul Stirling:
Veteran Ireland batter Paul Stirling has been honored by being nominated for the ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Year 2021 Award. Amassing a massive 705 runs in ODIs, including three tons & two half-centuries in 14 matches at an average of 79.66. He scored a superb century against the UAE to kickstart the year which turned out to be a losing fixture.
Paul Stirling was Ireland’s highest run-scorer by scoring 285 runs in three ODIs even though Ireland suffered a 3-0 series sweep against Afghanistan. He scored two centuries in three games but found no support from the other batters.
