BAN vs SL 2022: Shakib-Al-Hasan ruled out of the first Test after testing Positive for COVID-19

Shakib-Al-Hasan has been ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka after being tested positive for COVID-19. He tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday in a PCR & a rapid antigen test, which are pre-requisites for joining the team.

Shakib-Al-Hasan was slated to join the Bangladesh Test team on Wednesday, two days after they started training in Chattogram on Monday. According to a BCB Press release, Shakib has been sent into self-isolation & will be re-tested in due course.

However, Bangaldesh haven’t named any replacement for Shakib but have included all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain as a reserve for the Mehidy Hasan Miraz shortly after they had originally announced the Test squad.

Shakib-Al-Hasan’s absence in Chattogram is going to be a major setback for the Bangaldesh team who would be tottering without the services of Mehidy Hasan & Taskin Ahmed. Mehidy Hasan & Taskin Ahmed both have been ruled out of the first Test due to finger & shoulder injuries. Though BCB has included Shoriful Islam in the Test squad his participation in the Playing XI is subject to a fitness test ahead of the first Test.

Bangladesh would miss the services of Shakib in the middle order after they succumbed to 53 & 80 in two fourth innings in South Africa. His absence could prove a major setback for the Bangaldesh team who would be aiming to put exceptional performances against Sri Lanka in their home Test series.

This would be the fifth Test that Shakib-Al-Hasan will miss since playing one Test match against Pakistan back in December 2021. He missed the New Zealand Test series in 2021 due to personal reasons & further forced to miss the South Africa Tests earlier this year due to a family emergency. Shakib has now played three Tests out of Bangladesh’s 11 since his return from the one-year ban.

Sri Lanka vs Bangaldesh two-match Test series will be a part of the WTC 2021-2023 series.  Before the start of the two-match Test series, a practice match between both the teams will be played from the 10th to 11th May. The first test match of the Test series will be played on May 15, 2022, at Chittagong’s Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium while the last match of the series will be played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur on May 23.
