County Championship 2022: Saqib Mahmood ruled out of the Season due to a Stress Fracture

England’s fast bowler Saqib Mahmood has been ruled out of the County Championship 2022 after sustaining a lumbar stress fracture.

Saqib Mahmood who made his Test debut in the West Indies Test series in March missed Lancashire’s previous Championship fixture with lower back pain & subsequent scans revealed that the pacer has sustained a stress fracture. Mahmood has a pace bowling development contract from the ECB & his rehabilitation will be managed by England and Lancashire, with no time frame set for a return.

Mahmood’s absence will further hamper England’s depleted seam bowling resources in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand as Chris Woakes and Mark Wood both are out of contention due to an injury and Ollie Robinson struggling for attaining fitness. However, the Test squad will receive a boost with the return of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

Mahmood has played in Barbados and Grenada on England’s Test tour of the West Indies earlier in 2022, claiming six wickets at 22.83 and impressing with his ability to generate 90 kmph pace with the old ball. Saqib also top-scored with 49 in the third Test. He joined hands with Jack Leach to raise England from 114 for 9 to 204 all out. Saqib rejected the offer of going to IPL 2022  as a replacement player in-order to concentrate more on red-ball cricket & strengthened his place in England’s Test Squad.

“I spoke to a couple of the guys around me and felt as though it was in my best interests at the moment to focus on red-ball cricket,” he said.

“Hopefully that can highlight my ambition to play Test cricket and to give myself the best chance to do that by performing here for Lancashire.”

In the ongoing County Championship 2021-2022, Saqib had featured just once for Lancashire scalping 4 wickets for 90 runs in their fixture against Gloucestershire in the third round of the Championship, & was left out of the squad in order to receive treatment on a shoulder injury sustained earlier during the winters.

England will come into action against New Zealand in a three-match Test series starting on June 2 at Lord’s Stadium in England.
