CPL 2022: Saint Lucia Kings appoints Darren Sammy as their Head Coach

CPL 2022: Darren Sammy has been appointed as the Head Coach of St Lucia Kings for the upcoming edition of the CPL. Sammy will take over the coaching reins from Andy Flower, who was at the helm for the previous two seasons.

Darren Sammy who has been with the Saint Lucia Kings since the first edition of the CPL in 2013 has stepped down from Captaincy last year. He was then appointed as Lucia’s T20 Cricket Consultant & brand ambassador for the 2021 season and worked with Flower as part of the support staff.

“St Lucia is and will always be my home, it was always part of the plan to lead the franchise after my playing days,” Sammy said. “The time is now. I can’t wait to start this next chapter with this amazing franchise as we continue on our quest to win our first CPL title. Many thanks to the Kings franchise owners for the faith shown in me for this role. The journey continues.”

Darren Sammy who hasn’t featured in International Cricket since 2021 has not announced his retirement yet. He has last featured for Lucia Kings in the CPL 2020 where he led the Kings to the CPL finals for the first time in seven years. After that, he was appointed as the head coach of Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL, and in June last year was added to the Cricket West Indies (CWI) board as an independent non-member director for two years.

Kings who were able to qualify for the playoffs just once in seven years since the start of the CPL have bounced back spectacularly by successively qualifying for the finals in the last two years. However, they failed to finish clinch the title on both occasions & would look ahead to turn their fortunes this season. According to sources, Faf du Plessis, who led Kings last season, is likely to continue as captain this year as well.

The CPL 2022 is all set to kick start on August 30 & will take place in four countries – St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, and Guyana. The Providence Stadium in Guyana is set to host the final on September 30.
