Cricket gets shortlisted for review by Olympics Committee

In a major breakthrough for cricket fans across the globe, the sport has been shortlisted for review by the International Olympics Committee (IOC). Cricket efforts for recognition at the Olympics were added alongside nine sports for the Los Angeles Olympic Games 2028.

The nine sports that are under review and shortlisted include Cricket with Baseball, Softball, Flag Football, Karate, Kickboxing, Squash, Motorsport, Lacrosse, and Break Dancing.

The IOC and the International Cricket Council (ICC) are under deliberate discussions over the inclusion of cricket at the Olympics. IOC had previously asked the ICC for a date to make a presentation but the apex cricketing body failed to reply in a stipulated period.

The final decision to include Cricket in the Olympics will be taken at the upcoming meeting of the IOC in the second quarter of 2023. Notably, Women’s Cricket has been included in the ongoing edition of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. This can pave the way for the game to be recognized as more nations will get indulged and encouraged to practice the team sport.

A total of 28 Sports receives a green signal for the LA28 Games

Earlier in February, the IOC gave a green signal to a total of 28 sports to be a part of the Los Angeles Games 2028. During the same meeting, the decision to expand the sports line was made keeping in mind the holistic development of the youth. And soon in May, the IOC came up with the idea of evaluating “potential new sports” that can be added to the Los Angeles Games 2028.

Certain criteria needs to be fulfilled before induction of a sport in the Olympics:

  • Priority in reduction of cost.
  • Engaging the Best athletes and their safety
  • Global Recognition amongst fans
  • Gender Equality
  • Upholding Integrity

Cricket likely fits across all the prerequisites and will witness a fruitful consideration. The ICC along with ECB had made wholehearted efforts to include cricket at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. However, due to the busy men’s international schedule, only women’s cricket was included.

Previously, men’s ODI cricket was conducted at the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games in 1998.
