The Mzansi Super League 2021 which was slated to be played in February 2022 has been canceled amid COVID-19 concerns in South Africa, confirmed CSA through its Official statement. CSA stated that the discovery of the new Omicron variant of Covid-19 has “made it difficult to maintain the brand proposition of being the premium international T20 tournament, due to increased travel restrictions as imposed by many nations on South Africa”.

CSA’s acting CEO Pholetsi Moseki confirmed that the CSA T20 Challenge will be played instead of the MSL in February.

“The decision to cancel the 2021 edition of the MSL is meant to allow CSA and its strategic partners to revamp and review the tournament post-Covid-19 to regain its market and commercial position,” Moseki said. “For its purposes, the MSL slot will again be replaced by a domestic CSA T20 Challenge, featuring the 8 (eight) Division 1 team and this tournament will take place in February 2022”, Moseki added in his statement.

The MSL T20 League was played in 2018 and 2019 but was called off in 2020 because of logistical challenges posed by COVID-19. The league was converted into a domestic T20 competition – played among eight top-tier teams starting from this season. Paarl Rocks franchise is currently the defending MSL Champions while Lions are the domestic T20 Champions in the 2021-2021 domestic tournament.

On Sunday, CSA reported that the final round matches of the CSA’s domestic tournament have been postponed & would be rescheduled in 2022. This season CSA’s domestic cricket tournaments haven’t been played in a bio-secure environment but this would change for the One day & T20 tournaments. Last summer both white-ball tournaments took place in bio-secure conditions.

Currently, the Indian cricket team is in South Africa for the three-match Test and three-match ODI series. The first Test is set to commence on December 26, 2021.

South Africa is currently reeling with the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus. The country is practicing COVID-19 safety protocols to avoid further worsening of the situation.
