The match unfolded with Delhi Capitals winning the toss & opting to bowl first. Batting first, RR got off to a poor start with opener Jos Buttler walking back to the hut within the powerplay over for just seven runs. After being promoted to No.3 to bat with Yashasvi Jaiswal, the duo resurrected RR’s innings with a 43-run stand. Soon DC got their second breakthrough with Mitchell Marsh dismissing Jaiswal for 19 runs to leave RR in a state of bother.
Ashwin then joined hands with Devdutt Padikkal to keep RR’s scoreboard ticking. Together the duo stitched a solid 53 runs for the third wicket to stabilize RR’s innings. Devdutt Padikkal smashed 48 runs off 30 balls with six boundaries & two sixes while Ravichandran Ashwin amassed 50 runs off 38 balls with four boundaries & two sixes. The duo provided a strong hand to RR’s innings which were otherwise looking submerging.
Mitchell Marsh who was back into the attack did the needful by dismissing well set Ashwin for 50 runs. Padikkal on the other end was heading strong with the bat as he stitched brief stands with Sanju Samson & Riyan Parag to keep RR alive in the game. In the end, Devdutt Padikkal fell prey to Nortje’s bowling & was sent packing after scoring 48 runs reducing RR to 146-6. As a result, RR was wrapped for 160-6 by the end of 20 overs. For Delhi Capitals, the best bowlers were Chetan Sakariya (2-23), Anrich Nortje (2-39), and Mitchell Marsh (2-25).
In reply, Delhi Capitals got off to a poor start as they lost the opener, Srikar Bharat, in the first over. This brought Mitchell Marsh on the crease who stitched a mammoth stand 144-run stand for the second wicket to put Delhi Capitals in the commanding position. Mitchell Marsh smashed 89 runs off 62 balls with five boundaries and seven sixes. The duo stood strong on the crease & soon brought the equation down to 47 runs in the final five overs.
However, in the 18th over, Chahal finally sclaped the prized wicket of Mitchell Marsh. But it was late as the damage was already done with DC just three runs away from a win. Rishabh Pant smashed two sixes in the 18th over to bring DC near to victory. David Warner in the start of the 19th over did the job by smashing the winning runs for Delhi capitals & ending their chase at 162-3. David warner stayed unbetaen by scoring 52 off 41 balls with five boundaries and a six.
This defeat marked RR’s fifth loss in the ongoing IPL 2022. They are intact at the third position on the Points Table with 14 Points in their kitty.
