Graham Thorpe admitted to the hospital with a ‘serious illness’

Former England’s Batting Coach, Graham Thorpe has been admitted to a hospital with a ‘serious illness’ said Professional Cricketers Association in a statement.

A statement from the PCA, issued at the request of Thorpe’s family, read, “Graham Thorpe has recently fallen seriously ill and is currently in hospital receiving treatment. His prognosis is unclear at this stage and we ask for privacy for him and his family at this time. Our thoughts are with Graham and his family.”

Thorpe’s former county Surrey, where he spent the whole of his 17-year first-class career, added: “The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with Graham, his wife Amanda, and family at this time. He is an icon of the English game, known by millions of cricket fans and forever a favorite son of Surrey CCC.”

Graham Thorpe has played 100 Tests for England between 1993 and 2005, averaging 44.66 with 16 centuries. He was recently appointed as the New Head Coach of Afghanistan after he stepped down as England’s batting coach following their 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia.

Graham Thorpe made his debut for England’s Test team in 1993 & right in his debut against Australia at Trent Bridge he turned heads around by scoring a glorious ton. Thorpe soon established himself as one of the central figures of England’s Test team in the mid-1990s and early 2000s, thanks to his counter-attacking that helped England’s test team to achieve success in crucial Test series. He was also instrumental in England’s back-to-back series wins in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2000-2001. He called time on his illustrious Test career in June 2005.

After retirement, he turned to coaching after a brief stint with New Wales in the Sheffield Shield in 2007 before returning to Surrey Club. Thorpe joined England’s Coaching set-up in 2010 as a batting coach & later as assistant coach to Chris Silverwood. Graham Thorpe’s role with ECB ended this year after he along with Silverwood and Ashley Giles, the former director of cricket, were all sacked in the wake of the Ashes loss.
