“I think that will be grossly unfair” – Aakash Chopra on the chances of Shikhar Dhawan getting dropped from ODI team

Shikhar Dhawan

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Shikhar Dhawan shouldn’t be dropped from India’s ODI squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. Shikhar Dhawan isn’t in the best of form in white-ball cricket.

He has made forgettable returns for Delhi in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. In 5 innings, the southpaw has only managed to score only 58 runs with the bat. Despite that, Aakash Chopra believes that it will be unfair if Shikhar Dhawan will be dropped from the ODI team ahead of the ODI series against South Africa.

“12, 8 (18), 14, 12 and 0 – that’s his last five scores in a high-scoring Vijay Hazare Trophy. Should you select him? I think he should be. Dhawan is India’s proven customer. He has done phenomenally well in One-Day cricket. He is the Mr ICC. If we look at the 2023 World Cup — if he stays fit — why not?” Chopra said on his official YouTube channel.

“India haven’t played much ODI cricket in 2021, so why drop him? Some people had insisted that he should’ve even been selected in the T20 World Cup. Just because Ruturaj is scoring runs, or Iyer can open, or the Rohit-Rahul pair is set.. I think dropping him would be grossly unfair.”

Shikhar Dhawan has an outstanding record for India in the ICC tournaments. He was the highest run-scorer for India in both the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy. Besides, he also scored the most runs for India in the 2015 World Cup. Dhawan, unfortunately, played only 2 matches in the ICC T20 World Cup 2019 due to an injury he suffered during the tournament.

Aakash Chopra stated that if Dhawan stays fit then India can consider him playing in the ICC 2023 World Cup. “If I am looking towards the 2023 World Cup, if he stays fit, why not? But it is not the turn to drop him now because India has not played ODI cricket in 2021. And whatever T20 he has played, whether it is the first or second half of the IPL, some people feel he should have been in the World Cup team as well.”
