England captain Joe Root’s stunning form in the ongoing International Cricket Council World Test Championship series against India has helped him to reclaim the top spot in the latest ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings after six long years.
Joe Root had started the ongoing Pataudi Trophy test series in the fifth position but his blistering 507 runs scored in three tests has helped him to overtake Virat Kohli, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith & New Zealand Captain Kane Williamson whom Root leads by 15 rating points. Joe Root was on the second spot before the Leeds test in which he scored 121 runs in a single inning. Joe Root was previously at the number one spot in December 2015 before being overtaken by Kane Williamson, with Virat Kohli & Smith also reaching the pinnacle since 2015. Apart from these four, the other batsman who was at the top spot in the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings was Ab De Villiers. He was on the top spot in November 2015.
Joe Root is just one point below his career-best aggregate of 917 rating points which he achieved in August 2015 after scoring 130 against Australia in Nottingham. Apart from Joe Root, only four other England batsmen could achieve more rating points in the list- Len Hunton, Jack Hobbs, Peter May & Denis Compton.
Rohit Sharma overtakes Virat Kohli to become India’s Top-ranked batsman
The other batsman who has gained from the latest test rankings update is Indian Opener batsman Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma has overtaken Virat Kohli to occupy the fifth spot in the latest ICC Men’s Test rankings Update. Rohit Sharma’s scores of 19 & 59 have helped him to move up by one place to his career-best fifth spot. Someone other than Kohli to become the top-ranked Indian batsman in the ICC test Rankings was Cheteshwar Pujara who was in the second spot while Kohli was in the fifth spot in the list in November 2017. In the latest update, Pujara advanced up by three spots to reach 15th position after his second innings stunning knock of 91 runs. He is the fourth Indian on the list with Rishabh Pant still marching ahead of him in 12th position despite moving down by four slots.
England’s batsmen have also progressed in the latest weekly rankings update. Rory Burns moved up by five places to 24th position, Jonny Bairstow advanced up by two places to 70th position while Dawid Malan has re-entered the rankings list, by scoring 70 runs he is in 88th position.
In the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings for bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah has moved up from 10th to ninth spot. England’s seamers have also made remarkable gains after dominating the third tets match. England’s star pacer James Anderson has re-entered in the top five slots. His four-wicket haul helped him to advance by one spot in the Test Rankings list. The ‘Player of the Match’ in the third test, Ollie Robinson has moved up by nine places to 36th position after registering his seven-wicket haul. Craig Overton re-entered the rankings list in the 73rd position by scalping three wickets in each innings.
ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings Update:
In the ICC Men’s Test T20I player rankings, Ireland Paul Stirling has moved up by one place to 23rd position with scores of 24 & 37 in the ongoing T20I T20I series against Zimbabwe while Kevin O’Brien has moved up from 42nd to 39th position after scoring 25 & 60 in two matches being played in Dublin. In the ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings update for bowlers, Zimbabwe’s Tendai Chetara has advanced up by five places to the 99th position in the list.
