The rescheduled fifth Test between England & India saw some uplifting performances by the players from both teams & they were rewarded in the latest ICC Test Rankings Update. Jonny Bairstow & Rishabh Pant who starred with the bat made it to the top ten of the ICC Test Rankings. Bairstow is currently placed at the tenth position while Pant reaches a career-best position at No 5.
On the other hand, Joe Root’s unbeaten ton in the second innings helped him hold the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings for batters with his career-best rating of 923. Bairstow who was named the Player of the Match after his innings of 106 & unbeaten 114 in England’s seven-wicket win, which helped his team to round off the series by 2-2, moved up by 11 places to the 10th spot. His four tons in the last three Tests helepd him to make such a big move in the Ranking table. He has 1218 runs at an average of 55.36 with six centuries in the current World Test Championship cycle.
While Bairstow moves up, Virat Kohli slips down on the latest Rankings Update. Kohli who managed to score just 11 & 20 in the Edgbaston slips down by four places to no 13. This is the first time since 2016 that Kohli couldn’t feature in the Top Ten in Test Cricket. While for Bairstow, luck has opened doors of success for him as he has witnessed a steep rise in his rankings position in recent weeks. Prior to the New Zealand Test series in June, he was ranked 47th. Now, he is back in the top ten for the first time since 2018.
Joe Root who joined hands with Bairstow to stitch an unbetaten 269-run stand during the rescheduled fifth Test that guided England over the line against India also moved upward in the latest Test Rankings Update. His unbetaten 142 runs knock in the second innings along with 31 in the first innings helped him to stretch his lead at the top of the table to 44 rating points over Marnus Labuschagne who occupies the second spot on the batters list. Joe Root is now among the top 20 highest-rated batters in Test history, at No. 19.
Meanwhile, Steve Smith & Babar Azam continues to occupy the third & fourth spot while Pant moves up to the fifth spot in the ICC Test Rankings for batters. Rishabh Pant, who was the line fighter for India, smashing 146 in the first innings & 57 in the second innings, helped him move up by six places to occupy 11.
In the bowlers’ Rankings, James Anderson & Nathan Lyon made fruitful gains. Anderson who picked up six wickets at Edgbaston, including 5 for 60 in the first innings moves up by one spot to occupy the sixth position on the list. And Lyon, who picked up nine wickets in the first Test in Sri Lanka, has risen five spots to 13th.
