ILT20: David Warner to miss the inaugural edition of UAE’s T20 League

UAE’s brainchild International League T20 (ILT20) is all set to enter the franchise league market with its first season scheduled for January 2023. What comes as a major setback for the ILT20 is the unavailability of Australian star opener David Warner. According to sources, David Warner is unlikely to feature in the ILT20 as he is under negotiations with CA & is likely to feature in the BBL 12.

If Warner agrees to a BBL contract then it would be his first appearance in BBL since 2013. Earlier, it was speculated that Warner would play in the ILT20 as its IPL franchise Delhi Capitals owns a Dubai franchise in the UAE’s ILT20. However, later David Warner’s Manager James Erskine confirmed to the Sydney Morning Herald that Warner has not signed any contract with the ILT20 & is in negotiations with CA & ACA to feature in BBL 12.

Will Aussies Big Stars choose BBL over ILT20?

David Warner & other Australian players have become available to play franchise leagues in Janaury 2023 after the cancellation of the South Africa ODI series. Australia vs South Africa Test series will conclude in Sydney on Janaury 8, 2023 & Australia’s next International fixture will be in mid-February when they will tour India for a four-match Test series. This makes Australia’s key Test players like Warner, Steven Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood available to play franchise cricket during the January-February window.

Cricket Australia is aware of the fact that Australian Contracted Players who are not contracted in the BBL are being offered $US450,000 to play in the UAE’s ILT20.  Along with Warner, Smith, Cummins & Hazlewood too don’t have contracts with BBL. So the board is looking forward to providing lucrative deals to their contracted players for choosing BBL 12 over ILT20.

On the other hand, Australia’s T20I specialists likes, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa, Aaron Finch, and Tim David all have BBL Contracts & are set to set the field on fire during the BBL 12.

BBL 12 will run from 13th December 2022 to February 4 2023 while ILT20 will be played from 6th January 2023 to 12th February 2023.
