India’s batter Shreyas Iyer said that he is happy with the overall performance of the team in his debut test but the win would have been like the ‘icing on the cake’.
The first test between India & New Zealand ended as a draw on Monday after New Zealand managed to survive & the hosts ended the first test just one wicket away from victory. Ravindra Jadeja scalped four wickets in the second innings while spinner Ravichandran Ashwin registered a three-wicket haul.
“It’s a great feeling, but would be the icing on the cake if we had won the game. You can see that the pitch is still intact. We bowled really well. The mindset was to play sessions & play as many balls as possible. People say I am a flamboyant player, don’t curb my instincts, but I was just looking to play as many balls”, Shreyas Iyer told Star Sports after the first test ended.
“Enjoyed batting with Ashwin & Saha. Happy with the overall performances of the team. The pressure is always there. They got off to a great start. Once we got a sniff & got quick wickets, we made the best use of the situation”, he added.
Shreyas Iyer starred with the bat for the hosts as he hit his maiden century on Day 2 of the first test & stole the match with his blistering knock of 65 which put India in a commanding position on Day Four of the Kanpur Test.
Coming to the match, the Black Caps managed to survive defeat by the barest of margins on the last day of the first test against India as their lower order displayed a gutsy performance that helped the Black Caps to walk away with a draw at the Green Park in Kanpur on Monday.
Team India managed to calp eight wickets on Day 5 of the IND vs NZ 1st Test but the scintillating performance by New Zealand’s lower order helped them to snatch victory from the jaws of hosts.
