IND vs NZ 2nd Test: The Black Caps head into the second test against India in Mumbai without the presence of their captain Kane Williamson who has been ruled out of the second test due to a long-standing left elbow injury that escalated during the Kanpur Test. Tom Latham who had guided the visitors to a remarkable draw in Kanpur will lead the team in the absence of Williamson.
New Zealand Head Coach Gary Stead confirmed Williamson’s injury & stated that the increasing batting load in the test format has aggravated his elbow injury.
“It’s been a really tough time for Kane having to deal with such a persistent injury,” Stead said. “While we’ve been able to manage the injury through the year and the T20 World Cup, the shift to Test cricket and the increased batting loading has re-aggravated his elbow.
“Ultimately the injury is still not right and while he got through the Kanpur Test, it was clear playing in the second Test wasn’t an option,” he added.
His left elbow injury has been a consistent problem for Williamson who had missed Bangladesh ODIs, the first part of the IPL 2021 in India as well as the Edgbaston Test against England in the build-up to the World Test Championship final.
India too faced the wrath of injuries as three of their players- Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma & Ravindra Jadeja have been ruled out of the second test due to injuries. Ajinkya Rahane missed the secodn test due to a minor left hamstring strain that he suffered in the first Test.
While Ishant Sharma & Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out of the IND vs NZ 2nd Test due to injuries. Ishant Sharma had dislocated his first left little finger on the final day of the first test while Ravindra Jadeja had sustained a right forearm injury in the fixture. Mohammed Siraj and Jayant Yadav are likely to replace the duo while Virat Kohli will bat at the No 4 spot in place of Rahane.
