The margin of win was India’s biggest over the Black Caps in terms of runs in a T20I match. Defending 184, India was lethal in their bowling & fielding attack as they restricted New Zealand to 111 in 17.2 overs despite a blistering fifty from Martin Guptill. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel starred with the ball as he scalped three wickets but it was an all-round bowling display by India that outclassed New Zealand.

With a remarkable series win, Rohit Sharma had a strong start to his T20I Captaincy stint as he was on point with his tactics on several occasions & managed to get the best for the team from collective teamwork across the three T20Is against New Zealand. It was also the second successive time India have clean-swept New Zealand as the Black Caps were hammered 5-0 at home last year.

Rohit Sharma’s ‘Pull Shots’ frustrated Black Caps bowlers

The match unfolded with Rohit Sharma winning the toss & opting to bat first. He led the batting attack from the forefront by accelerating massive runs at the top of the order. He was very well supported by Ishan Kishan who was playing in place of KL Rahul. The duo of Rohit-Ishan added 69 runs in the powerplay.

Rohit Sharma broke Virat Kohli’s record for hitting most fifties in T20Is as he registered his 30th fifty during his 31 balls 56 runs knock. Rohit Sharma got the better of Blackcaps bowlers as he smashed them for his trademark pull shots.

However, Rohit Sharma got under pressure as the wickets fell in quick succession after Mitchell Santner scalped the wicket of Ishan Kishan after the powerplay overs. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav & Rishabh Pant lost their wickets as Santner ran through New Zealand’s top order by scalping three quick wickets.

Harshal & Chahar’s cameos guided India to a decent total of 184 runs

Ish Sodhi caught Rohit Sharma on 56 & tried to exert pressure on India however Shreyas Iyer & Venkatesh Iyer added handled India’s innings after Rohit’s dismissal. However, India was left reeling art 140/6 after Iyer departed in quick succession.

Just when things looked in control of New Zeaalnd & it seemed that they will be successful in restricting India below 160 runs target, however, India didn’t lose hope as they continued their fearless batting approach with Harshal Patel & Deepak Chahar scoring crucial runs in the lower order to help India put a mammoth total on board. Deepak Chahar scored (19) off Adam Milne’s final over as India posted a competitive total of 184.

Indian bowlers took the charge by scalping some early wickets

Indians bowlers were in the hunt for early wickets right from the beginning of New Zealand’s innings. However, India suffered an early hiccup as Deepak Chahar dropped Martin Guptill in the 2nd over but Axar Patel made sure that India doesn’t have to suffer because of Chahar’s dropped catch as he struck and removed Daryl Mitchell & Mark Chapman in his first over. Rohit’s move to bring the spinners early in the attack did wonders for India as the Balck Caps managed to score just 37 runs in the powerplay by losing three quick wickets.

Yuzvendra Chahal who was smashed for maximums by Martin Guptill bounced back to catch the big fish of the Blackcaps as Rohit gave him extra over to prove his mettle despite being smashed. Skipper Rohit used his resources wonderfully well as Harshal Patel continued his good showing, picking up 2 wickets. Venkatesh Iyer got to bowl for the first time in the series and picked up a wicket.
