IND vs SA 2022: Former India Captain who was once known as an authoritative stroke maker & a destructive batter who often made batting look like a child’s play in front of top bowlers is now a bundle of unsure footwork & poor shot selection. Virat Kohli’s prolonged Lean phase has become a talking point in the IPL 2022.
His consistent poor performances have grabbed the attention of the Indian selectors as well. And after giving it a thought the Indian selectors have decided to have a serious talk with Virat Kohli to understand whether he wants a break from cricket before selecting the squad for the South Africa T20I series.
“It’s a phase every player goes through and Virat is also going through the same. He will overcome it for sure. But as selectors, we will have to think about the team first. We will have a chat with him on whether he wants a break from cricket or continue to fight the slump,” a member of the selection committee told the media.
Virat Kohli has already broken the record of registering most golden ducks in an IPL season after getting dismissed for a first-ball duck in their previous fixture against SunRisers Hyderabad on Sunday. He has managed to score n average of just 19.64 in 12 matches in IPL 2022 so far.
“We will have a chat with him on whether he wants a break from cricket or continue to fight the slump,” a member of the selection committee told the media.
Though IPL’s form may not always be a criterion for India’s squad selection, Virat Kohli’s International form too has been diminishing in the last two years. It has been more than 100 innings across all competitions and formats that Kohli raised his bat for a century. In the ongoing IPL 2022, Kohli has managed to score just one fifty at a poor strike rate of 109.43. With his friend & former head coach Ravi Shastri’s advice, Kohli came to bat as an opener in RCB’s fixture against RR, which too didn’t work in his favor. Considering Kohli’s struggle with the willow, selectors had to rethink whether Virat Kohli should be picked in the squad.
Meanwhile, former head coach Ravi Shastri had advised Virat Kohli to take a 1-2 month break from cricket & come back rejuvenated. However, Virat Kohli is yet to inform the selectors about his availability. On the other hand, the BCCI is too desperate to hold an ICC trophy & with young talents proving their prowess time & again the prospect of dropping Kohli from the crucial South Africa Series can’t be ruled out.
“He is 33 and plays around 40-50 matches a year. It is only natural that it will take a toll on his body. Should he be dropped is a question that will be answered later. Virat has done enough for Indian cricket to earn that place and respect. If he wants a break, he will get a break but only after we have a chat with him,” the selector told media.
The BCCI is all set to announce the squad for the South Africa T20I series during the IPL 2022 Playoffs. As per the reports, The selectors will speak to Kohli before the selection meeting with Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid.
