IND vs WI 2022: R Ashwin will not feature in the upcoming white-ball series against West Indies, sources within the BCCI confirmed the development. The source said that the spinner is undergoing treatment for his injury & will miss the entire white ball series against West Indies slated to begin on February 6.
The selection committee was going to conduct a team selection process for the three ODIs & three T20Is against West Indies on January 25 itself. However, it has to be pulled off due to the unavailability of Rahul Dravid & a couple of other selectors who have traveled for almost 24 hours to reach India from South Africa. The selection process will now be conducted in the next two days.
Ravichandran Ashwin has been recalled into India’s white-ball teams since the T20 World Cup 2021, considering his excellent performances with the ball in the previous series. He has been included in the Indian squad for the white ball series to prepare him for the 2022 Twenty20 WC and the 2023 ODI WC. The major reason behind integrating R Ashwin into limited-overs formats is the need for his experience and expertise to strengthen the team.
The coach Rahul Dravid has decided to manage his workload in regular intervals so that he is not missed for the major tournaments. However, R Ashwin will not feature in the IND vs WI 2022 series because of his treatment which will keep him out of action for three weeks. He should be back for the Sri Lanka series in February-March.
Meanwhile, what comes as good news for the Indian team is the return of its newly appointed captain for the crucial home white ball series against the West Indies. Yes, Rohit Sharma is completely fit & is ready to lead the team confirmed BCCI. It would be his first series as the full-time ODI skipper after he was left out of the South Africa series because of a hamstring injury.
There are clouds over the availability of Ravindra Jadeja & Hardik Pandya for the white ball series. Though Ravindra Jadeja was seen bowling & batting normally at the NCA in Bangalore his selection for the white ball series will depend on the fitness report from the NCA physios. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya will most probably not feature in the series as he is not fully fit.
Other key players of team India are available for selection including Virat Kohli who has not asked for any rest for the series until now. However, the National Selectors as a part of their workload management policy will leave out some key players & include new talents into the squad. Spearhead Jasprit Bumrah could be the one to be given rest. India’s workload management policy aims at providing a golden chance to newcomers to make their dream debut for the national team & prove their mettle.
The three-match ODI series will be played in Ahmedabad on February 6, 9, and 11, and the T20Is will be played in Kolkata, on February 16, 18, and 20.
