India to host Australia & South Africa for White Ball Series in September-October Window

India to host Australia & South Africa for White Ball Series in September-October Window

With players communicating about unrealistic jam-packed schedule & the need to maintain a balance, BCCI continues to do things in their way. The board has now decided to host Australia & South Africa for 9 white ball matches between Asia Cup 2022 and T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

India will play three-match T20Is series against Australia after the conclusion of Asia Cup 2022 following the three-match home T20I & ODI series against South Africa. The T20-bound World Cup team will play three T20I games against Australia & South Africa before heading for the marquee event down under in October this year. On the other hand, India’s ODI team which will stay back in India will lock horns with South Africa in the ODI series after the conclusion of the T20I series.

According to the sources, India will play Australia in Mohali (September 20), Nagpur (September 23), and Hyderabad (September 25). They will then complete their World Cup preparations with three more T20 against the Proteas in Trivandrum (September 28), Guwahati (October 1), and Indore (October 3). The touring T20I team will then depart for Australia while India’s ODI team will play three-match ODI series against South Africa from October 6 to October 11 in Ranchi, Lucknow & Delhi.

When BCCI was questioned about the reason behind hosting so many fixtures ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022, their reply was quite astonishing.

“As our secretary, Jay Shah had said recently, we will have two national teams of equal strength available. So the three ODIs will be played at a time when the national team leaves for the World T20,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“The ODI as per rotation was to come to Kolkata but it was during the time of Durga Puja and CAB won’t be able to organize the police deployment during festival time. Hence one match has been allocated to Delhi,” a BCCI source added.

Meanwhile at BCCI’s AGM held on July 21 in Mumbai, Sourav Ganguly announced the board’s plan to reintroduce the traditional domestic tournaments, Duleep and Irani Trophy which was last played in 2019 before the outbreak of COVID-19, in the September-October window later this year. During the meet, Ganguly also stated that the Asia Cup 2022 will now be played in the UAE as Sri Lanka opted out of hosting the marquee event due to the mounting political unrest in the country.
