Latest Cricket News: Akash Deep replaces injured Washington Sundar in RCB Squad

What comes as a major blow for the RCB squad is that Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the UAE leg of the IPL 2021 due to a finger injury. RCB has named Bengal’s medium-pacer Akash deep who is also a net bowler with the squad as his replacement.

Just before the start of the five-match test series against England Washington suffered a finger injury on his right hand when he was hit by a sharp delivery from Mohammed Siraj during the practice game between County Select XI & the Indian team. He was taken for an X-ray & the result had confirmed that he has suffered a fracture in his finger. Thus he was also ruled out of the entire five-match test series between India & England.

“Royal Challengers Bangalore’s all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL 2021 due to a finger injury. Akash Deep, a state cricketer from Bengal and net bowler with the franchise has been named as a replacement,” RCB said in a release.

“The move reiterates the focus RCB has on grooming and nurturing young players as the team continues to develop exceptional talents and create a pathway for young talents to find their way into IPL and Indian Cricket,” the Royal Challengers’ added in its statement.

Highlighting Akash Deep’s achievements, he was the second-highest wicket-taker for Bengal by scalping seven wickets from five matches at an average of 19.28 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021. He has also scalped 21 wickets at an average of 16.85 in 15 T20s. Deep has also been a regular bowler for the Bengal side across formats in the last two domestic seasons.

Akash Deep is RCB’s fifth replacement of the season. Earlier they have named Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga as Adam Zampa’s replacement and brought in Tim David as a replacement for Finn Allen. Australian pacers Daniel Sams and Kane Richardson were replaced by Dushmantha Chameera and George Garton.

Apart from these replacements, the team saw another major change in its coaching staff with the team’s director of cricket operations Mike Hesson taking the position of head coach from Simon Katich. Simon stepped down from the role of the head coach due to personal reasons.
