IPL 2022: BCCI to conduct franchise owners meet by Next Month

BCCI to conduct franchise owners meet to discuss Plan B amid surge in Omicron Cases

The BCCI is planning to conduct a meeting of IPL franchisee owners by next month to discuss an alternative plan for IPL 2022. The country is experiencing a rapid surge in Omicron cases & the BCCI is concerned about the COVID-19 situation nationwide during April/May when the IPL 2022 is scheduled to be commenced. In the owners meet the BCCI is likely to discuss all the existing situations with the owners. However, the option of conducting IPL 2022 in the UAE is not at all on the cards.

According to the original plan the league is scheduled to commence on April 2 in Chennai with matches scheduled to be played on a home-and-away basis if the COVID-19 situation doesn’t deteriorate in the country. The activation of Plan B will be observed only if the situation calls for it. However, the BCCI is not taking any risk & is aiming to formulate a concrete Plan B beforehand. Earlier in May 2021, in the absence of Plan B, the BCCI had to halt the IPL 2021 midway when the country was hit by the second wave of the pandemic & later the board had to move the entire bandwagon to UAE four months later.

“The meeting will be mainly introductory in nature with the BCCI on-boarding the owners of the two new teams – Lucknow and Ahmedabad. They are also exploring the idea of holding the whole tournament just in Mumbai and Pune or in the Gujarat cities of Ahmedabad, Baroda, and Rajkot if the Covid/Omicron situation worsens. The owners will be apprised of the alternatives as well as things to look forward to in the mega auction,” multiple franchise officials, who have spoken to the BCCI over the last couple days, say while confirming that the board is not considering UAE, where most games of the last two seasons were held, as an option.

IPL 2022 Auction Dates & Status of Ahmedabad Franchise

Most Probably the BCCI is planning to conduct the mega auction in the second week of February between 10 or 13. Kochi, Bangalore, Hyderabad & Delhi are shortlisted for venues & the final venue will be finalized based on the availability of the hotels.

Now coming to the most talked-about issue in the IPL 2022 i.e. the status of the Ahmedabad franchise. The immediate response from the Officials who are in the know of the developments said that the matter with the CVC Sports firm has been resolved almost but a formal communication has not gone to both the teams yet. The BCCI would probably hand over a formal clearance letter to CVC Sports by the beginning of next month.
