IPL 2022: Kane Williamson to fly back to New Zealand for the birth of his Second Child

IPL 2022: SRH Captain Kane Williamson will leave SRH’s bio-bubble to fly back to New Zealand to be with his wife at the time of birth of their second child.

“Here’s everyone at the #Riser camp wishing Kane Williamson and his wife a safe delivery and a lot of happiness,” the franchise posted on their social channel.

In the absence of Williamson, Bhuvneshwar Kumar who has Captained SRH in the past & Nicholas Pooran, West Indies newly appointed White Ball team captain are in contention to lead the franchise in their last league stage match against Punjab Kings on May 22 at the Wankhede Stadium.

Whether Williamson will return to the Bi-bubble if SRH makes it to the Playoffs is still unknown at this point. Both SRH & PBKS are still in contention for the Playoff Spot but could qualify only if RCB or DC lose their remaining league stage fixture.

Kane Williamson’s form in the IPL 2022 has been a major concern for SRH management. His strike rate of 93.50 is the worst among batters with a minimum of 100 runs. On Tuesday against Mumbai Indians, Williamson dropped down to No.6, with Priyam Garg partnering Abhishek Sharma at the top order.

After Garg set the platform with 42 off 26 balls, Rahul Tripathi and Pooran carried the momentum from there to help SRH reach 193 for 6. Williamson who walked out to bat in the 18th over scored an unbeaten eight runs off seven balls.

With Williamson being unavailable for SRH’s last league stage fixture, his compatriot Glenn Phillips might be in contention to make his debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Phillips is a well-versed all-rounder who can bat in the top as well as middle order with the ability of bowling quickish off-breaks. He had also kept wickets in the past, but a back condition has limited that skill. Notably, Phillips was the top six-hitter in T20 cricket in 2021, by smashing 97 sixes in 57 innings.

SunRisers Hyderabad will play their last league stage fixture against Punjab Kings on Friday, May 22 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Ending up at the wrong end in this fixture will end their IPL 2022 Campaign.
