IPL window extends, ECB & CA make windows for BBL & Hundred in the next FTP Cycle

The cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) has extended its player window from the previous two months to two and a half months, which will be effective from the upcoming FTP program. This comes amidst the addition of two new franchises from the 2022 edition- Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

Earlier Jay Shah, BCCI’s secretary had confirmed the expansion of IPL’s window to two & a half months and this draft is the implementation of his statement as the window from March to June in FTP 24-27 has been marked as IPL’s window.

According to the BCCI, the total number of matches from the upcoming edition of IPL will increase to 84 from 2024-2027 and 94 from 2027-2028. The England Cricket Board (ECB) has also followed the footsteps of IPL as it has announced a player window for its international cricketers for the latest addition to the domestic circuit- The Hundred.

Meanwhile, the Australian Cricket Board has rescheduled the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League so that it doesn’t align with international fixtures of Australian national players. All the pioneer cricketing bodies have put enormous attention on cash-rich domestic leagues. This is a major concern for the International Cricket Council which is in the process to draft a Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the 12 member nations from 2023-27.

The FTP is primarily built on the World Test Championship schedule and the decision of the hosts for premier ICC events including the World Cup, Champions Trophy, and the T-20 World Cup.

The growing popularity of domestic T-20 leagues is haunting ICC’s preparations of the FTP. Many newly established domestic leagues of member nations including the CPL (West Indies), PSL (Pakistan), and CSA (South Africa) are also keeping their schedule booked from January to February in the hunt for stupendous wealth creation.

The International Cricket Council will take the final decision on the Futures Tours Programme (FTP) at its upcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled to take place in Birmingham on July 25 and July 26. The FTP will confirm the hosts for the 2027 World Cup and the upcoming venue for the World Test Championship. Stay tuned with us for all the updates.
