Jasprit Bumrah is open to take up test Captaincy if given the opportunity

Just a day after Virat Kohli left test captaincy, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has expressed that he would be happy to take up the role of India’s Test captain if he would be given the opportunity. However, he added that he is ready to contribute to the growth of test cricket in whichever manner is required regardless of the post.

Jasprit Bumrah is looked upon as one of the strong contenders to replace Virat Kohli as India’s test captain however KL Rahul & Rohit Sharma have emerged as the frontrunners for the post.

“For me, I am ready to contribute in whichever manner I can, be it in the post or otherwise,” Bumrah told reporters on Monday. “If given opportunity it’s an honor, but if not then also I will try to do whatever is required to the best of my ability. My focus is to do well”, Jasprit Bumrah added to his statement.

According to reports, the national selectors have met Rohit Sharma & KL Rahul for taking up the position. While Rohit Sharma is India’s Captain in the limited-overs series & vice-captain in tests, KL Rahul was India’s vice-captain in the recently concluded test series in South Africa after Rohit was injured & couldn’t participate in the test series.

KL Rahul had led the Indian team in the second test when Virat Kohli was ruled out of the test with a back spasm. He will now lead the ODI team for the ODI series against South Africa as Rohit Sharma hasn’t recovered from his hamstring injury & is undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA.

Virat Kohli quit the T20I captaincy after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 & Rohit Sharma was appointed as the captain of the T20I team. However, the selectors have sacked Kohli from ODI captaincy as they wanted a single captain for white-ball cricket. Now as Virat Kohli has stepped down as India’s test captain his illustrious career as the captain of the Indian team across all formats has come to an end.

With Virat Kohli leaving captaincy duties & Rahul Dravid taking over from Ravi Shastri as India’s head coach a few months ago has brought a complete change in India’s leadership ladder. Talking about the change Jasprit Bumrah said that the players have respected the decisions & taken them in a positive way.

“See, I can’t speak for everyone but for me, I can say that it doesn’t really make a lot of difference,” Bumrah said at an online press conference on Monday (January 17). “Yes, we all are here to help in however way we can. And I think that’s the way all the players are responding to the changes that are happening as well. Everybody is respectful and they understand how the processes are going. Change is the only constant, so we’re happy. Yes, everybody is contributing, we are getting a lot of knowledge. Everybody’s trying to contribute towards that.

“So I don’t think anybody is facing a problem or is in a weird space with the change that is happening. Everybody understands the chain. Everybody’s played enough cricket to understand that this is the way the game goes and this is how you have to move forward. So everyone’s as a team, everyone in the team is quite positive and quite eager to contribute and go about the change that is happening.”

Jasprit Bumrah also praised Virat Kohli for his leadership qualities & said that his inputs as a leader will still be inclined in the team in the long run. “He’s been the leader of the team. He is energy-driven. He’s bought a lot of change in cricket. He has brought the fitness culture, everybody was heading in the same direction. Everybody got fitter as a team. So his contribution has been immense and is still immense. He is a very important player, a very important leader in the group”, said Jasprit Bumrah

“He’s captain for such a long period of time, so his assistance and his knowledge of the game will always be used by us as a team and his contribution will always be important. So even now, when he’s there in the squad, he will obviously add inputs and he’ll always give a suggestion. So that’s very important for all our players and we all look up to them. So that’s always been the case and it will be the same going further as well”, added Bumrah in his statement.
