Jess Jonassen to miss the start of Tri-Series due to COVID-19

Australia left arm-spinner Jess Jonassen will miss the beginning of the T20I tri-series to be played in Ireland after testing positive for COVID19. Jonassen is currently isolating at home in Brisbane & will depart for Ireland next Monday ahead of Australia’s final two matches of the tri-series which also features Ireland & Pakistan.

Tasmania’s swashbuckling all-rounder Heather Graham has been named as Jonassen’s replacement & will link with the Australian squad in Ireland in the coming days. The rest of Australia’s touring squad arrived in Belfast on Tuesday. Initially, Graham was named as a traveling reserve during the ODI World Cup 2022 this year & was elevated for a short tenure in the main squad when Ash Gardner tested positive for COVID-19.

Jess Jonassen was team management’s first-choice selection for the T20I team & there is no like-for-like replacement for the left-arm spinner. Jonassen’s absence might result in leg-spinners, Alana King and Amanda-Jade Wellington handling the spin department as they did twice during the Womne’s ODI World Cup 2022.

The T20I tri-series is slated to begin in Ireland on July 16 with Australia Women locking horns with Pakistan Women in the series-opening match. The tri-series will act as a preparatory ground for Ireland, Australia & Pakistan ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham at the end of the month.

This would be the first time when Australia will play an International fixture since clinching their seventh consecutive World champions title in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2022 held in early April. Australia Women’s team have appointed Shelley Nitschke as their new interim head coach after Matthew Mott departed to lead England men’s team, but the playing squad remains well-settled with the original group staying unchanged from the ODI World Cup team.
