NZC announces a 15-member full-strength squad for their upcoming white-ball tour of West Indies. What comes as a boon for the New Zealand squad is the return of their senior players such as Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Devon Conway, and Tim Southee to the white ball squad. All four of them last featured in New Zealand’s home Test series in June & were rested for the Black Caps ongoing tour of New Zeaalnd.
The National Selectors have named the same squad for both the T20I & ODI series of the West Indies tour. All the key players have been named in New Zealand’s 15-member squad as they are gearing up for the upcoming t20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. The upcoming white ball series against West Indies is crucial for Black Caps Skipper Kane Williamson who had last played a T20I in T20 World Cup 2021 & ODI back in March 2020. He was away from white-ball cricket for almost two years due to a combination of being rested & suffering from persistent injuries. The skipper would aim to make his presence felt by performing well in the West Indies white ball tour.
No Place for Youngsters in the 15-Member Squad
Meanwhile, the return of senior players means that youngsters who are playing New Zealand’s white-ball tour of Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands would be rested from the series. On the other hand, Adam Milne who was ruled out of the Europe tour due to an Achilles injury could not make it to the white ball squad after failing to recover on time.
“It’s always exciting to be heading somewhere you’ve not been in a while and I know this group can’t wait for the challenge of taking on the West Indies in the Caribbean,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said.
“For Kane, Trent, Tim, and Devon, this will be the first time they have played white-ball cricket for New Zealand since last year’s T20 World Cup and tour to India – so this trip will be important for them.
“We also have players such as Michael [Bracewell] and Finn [Allen] who are relatively new to the international stage but have really put their hands up for selection when given opportunities. As a selector, it’s been great to see these guys push their cases.”
The Black Caps 15 member Squad for the West Indies tour will be coached by Gary Stead while former New Zealand internationals Dean Brownlie (batting coach) and Graeme Aldridge (bowling coach) will assist him.
New Zealand is slated to play two T20Is against Scotland on July 27 and 29 followed by a one-off ODI on July 31. After the conclusion of the Scotland series, they will leave for the Netherlands where they will play two-match two T20Is on August 4 & 5 after which the West Indies-bound squad will head for the Caribbean while the rest of them will return back to New Zealand.
New Zealand will lock horns with West Indies in three T20Is & three ODIs across 11 days in Jamaica & Barbados.
