Latest Cricket News: ECB includes Saqib Mahmood in Squad as Cover ahead of the Second Test

Latest Cricket News: The ECB on Wednesday confirmed that the pacer Saqib Mahmood has been included in England’s squad as cover for the second test against India starting on August 12 at Lord’s. While Dominic Bess will leave the squad & return to Yorkshire.

“Lancashire pacer Saquib Mahmood has been added to the England squad as cover for the second test against India. Spinner Dom Bess will leave the squad & return to Yorkshire this morning”, the ECB said in an official statement.

James Anderson missed England’s training session on Wednesday morning as he is suffering from a tight squad. On the other hand, Stuart Broad Stuart suffered a calf injury while training. He underwent scans & is waiting for the reports. Whether he can be featured in the second test or not will be decided once the board gets his reports.

The first test between India & England ended in a draw as day five of the first test was abandoned due to rain. India was eyeing a win as they needed 157 runs to win the match but due to rain, no play was possible on the final day of the first test, ending the match in a draw.

Earlier on Wednesday, both England & India were fined 40% of their match fees & were docked for two ICC WTC Championship points each for maintaining slow over rates in the first test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Now both India & England have two points each in their WTC Points table heading into the second Test at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur will miss the second test due to a hamstring injury & probably Ravichandran Ashwin might replace him in the second test match. On the other hand, to create a balance in England’s squad in the absence of Chris Woakes & Ben Stokes, the board has recalled Moeen Ali into the squad ahead of the second test. Ollie Pope may also find his way in the England squad for the second test starting from August 12 at the lord’s cricket stadium.
