Vasudeo Paranjape passed away at the age of 82

Latest Cricket News: The former Mumbai Cricketer Vasudeo Paranjape passed away on Monday at the age of 82. Paranjape who was survived by his wife, retired professor Lalita, two daughters, and former India cricketer and national selector son Jatin took his last breath on Monday.

“The Mumbai Cricket Association expresses profound grief on hearing about the sad demise of Shri Vasudeo Paranjape who passed away on 30th August 2021. On behalf of the Apex Council members of MCA, all the member clubs as also the cricketing fraternity we condole his demise,” secretary Sanjay Naik and joint secretary Shahalam Shaikh stated in the note. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and MNS leader Raj Thackeray paid their tribute to the late Vasudeo Paranjape.

The former Mumbai cricketer has palyed 29 first-class matches for Mumbai & Baroda in his career spanning from 1956-1970. During this period all the Ranji Trophy titles were shared between these two teams with Mumbai winning the Ranji Trophy 12 times. During his first-class career, he has scored 785 runs at an average of 23.78 and picked up nine wickets.

His highest first-class score of 127 runs came against Baroda in the 1964-65 Ranji season. He had mentored & coached several renowned cricketers emerging from Mumbai, including Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Rohit Sharma, to name a few.

Vasudeo was recognized for his astounding leadership skills & a sharp sense of humor. He influenced other prominent players of the country like Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and Yuvraj Singh, and even international players such as Ed Smith. Vasudeo was also one of the most prominent players in Mumbai’s local cricket team- Dadar Union which was regarded as one of the strongest sides in the city during his playing days.

Over the years, Vasudeo coached several national youth teams apart from serving the National cricket Academy as a coach. His son, Jatin Paranjape, went on to play for India and even serve as the national selector.
