Jaffna Kings continued their sheer dominance in the LPL 2021 by crushing Dambulla Giants by seven wickets to register their fifth successive win in the LPL on Monday at the R.Premadasa Stadium. With this stunning win, the Jaffna Kings have booked a spot in the playoffs.
After winning the toss & electing to bowl, the Jaffna Kings bundled Dambulla Giants for 69 runs with Chaturanga de Silva returning with the figures of 4 wickets for 16 runs. Perera’s decision to bowl on a spinning track proved to be the correct one as off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana gave early blows to Dambulla Giants dismissing Niroshan Dickwella & Shoaib Maqsood in the first over itself. In the very next over Theekshana removed Nuwanidu Fernando for two runs sending Dambulla Giants on the backfoot.
Afterward, De Silva came into attack & removed Giants middle-order in quick succession. Philip Salt showed a bit of resistance in front of Jaffna Kings lethal bowling attack but soon succumbed in front of Kings bowling attack as their star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga removed Philip Salt for 23 runs & the Giants were soon bowled out in 14.1 overs by setting a meager total of 69 runs for the Jaffna Kings to chase.
In the chase, Jaffna Kings lost Upul Tharanga early but the team took a surprising decision of sending Wanindu Hasaranga to bat at No 3. Wanindu Hasaranga made the most of this opportunity by chirping in with a quick-fire 18 ball 37 runs to set the base of a scintillating win for Jaffna Kings. On the other hand, Avishka Fernando who led the bowling attack scored 22 runs for 17 balls by smashing a six & two fours in his innings making the target look short.
Soon Jaffna Kings registered a victory in style with hard hitter Fernando smashing the secodn delivery of the ninth over by Ramesh Mendis over mid-wicket for a six. Chasing a target of 67 runs & entering the semi-finals was not a big task for Kings who did it with ease.
