Deepak Chahar has been crucial for CSK’s success the day since he joined the team ahead of the IPL 2018. Chahar was given the opportunity to bowl the overs in the Power-play keeping in view Chahal’s ability to swing the ball in both ways. This opportunity has helped the pacer to become the vital part of CSK’s bowling squad.
However Chahal recalled that he also wanted to bowl the last detah overs especially after ramping up his pace from the mid-130s to 140s & also asked Dhoni why he hasn’t been utilized in the death overs & Dhoni’s reply is what left Chahar completely speechless. “I groom youngsters” was Dhoni’s reply, said Chahar to former India Opener Aakash Chopra in his show Aakash Vani.
“Generally, the bowlers who bowl in the 120-125 range are used with the new ball. But when I was playing for Chennai in 2018, I had been bowling in the 140s,” Chahar said.
“So I asked the bowling coach why I wasn’t being used at the death and the coach said I should be given the ball in death overs.
“Then one day I gathered the courage to ask Mahi bhai. He was sitting in his room and I asked him ‘why don’t you bowl me with the older ball?’
“He gave me a two-word answer: ‘I groom players.’ He said nothing more,” Chahar recalled.
Highlighting Chahar’s IPL career, he has grabbed 22 wickets from 17 matches for CSK in last season at an economy rate of 7.63 runs per over. Overall, he has 33 wickets from 34 IPL matches. Chennai play their first IPL 2020 match against Mumbai Indians on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
